About this file

Summary

This is a Demolition Backfill Specification document for Saint Louis Public Schools (SLPS) for the "Hempstead" project. The specification outlines comprehensive backfill requirements for excavations resulting from demolition operations, including demolished foundations and basements. The contractor must provide compacted backfill materials and engage an independent third-party testing company to verify compliance with ASTM D 698 specifications. Backfill materials are categorized into four types: Type A (coarse aggregate angular crushed limestone), Type B (pea gravel), Type C (sand), and optional clean fill (crushed concrete or masonry from demolition). Compaction testing shall be performed at a rate of one test per 2,500 square feet per lift, with all testing costs included in the contractor's bid. The specification requires final grading to match indicated lines and elevations, establish natural drainage patterns, and includes detailed seeding requirements utilizing Kentucky 31 Tall Fescue with specified fertilizer, mulch, and maintenance protocols.

The specification mandates compaction of all fill materials to 95% density based on Standard Proctor Test (ASTM D 698 or AASHTO T-99), with moisture content maintained between 2% below and 3% above optimum levels. Specific compaction requirements vary by application: subsoil fill under grass areas to 6 inches below finish grade, Type B fill for utility trenches with 2-inch Type C fill overlay, and Type A fill for basement and foundation excavations. Fill material that does not meet specifications must be removed, replaced, and re-tested at the contractor's expense. The contractor bears all costs associated with testing, reporting, material removal, off-site disposal of surplus materials, and site preparation. Work shall comply with Missouri Department of Transportation Standard Specifications for Road and Bridge Construction and MODOT specifications for porous granular backfill, with maximum 12-inch lifts and a 1-inch tolerance on top surface of backfilling.
