About this file
Nahma Grade Multiuse Trail Culvert Installations Project
This is a design and construction specification manual for the State of Michigan Department of Technology, Management and Budget (DTMB) and Department of Natural Resources (DNR) for the Nahma Grade Multiuse Trail project (File #751/20155.JBB, Project #7136-21-0010). The project involves the installation of an aluminum box culvert (ALBC) structure along County Road 497 near Nahma, Michigan, with associated earthwork, drainage improvements, and site restoration. The scope of work includes site clearing and grubbing, earth moving and excavation, dewatering operations, erosion and sedimentation controls, storm utility drainage piping installation, and turf and grass restoration. The specifications detail comprehensive requirements for material quality, compaction standards, installation procedures, and field quality control testing throughout the construction phases.
The project specifications establish technical requirements for all materials and workmanship, including soil classification standards per ASTM specifications, compaction requirements ranging from 90 to 95 percent of maximum dry unit weight depending on application, and detailed installation protocols for the aluminum box culvert following AASHTO LRFD HL-93 Modified loading criteria. The contractor must submit product data, shop drawings, material test reports, and certification documents prior to work commencement. Quality control provisions require independent geotechnical testing at specified frequencies, with testing agency performing compaction verification and bearing capacity assessments. The contractor is responsible for all temporary erosion control measures, dewatering system design and operation, and final site restoration including turf establishment to achieve 90 percent grass coverage within the maintenance period. The contract closeout process requires submission of as-built drawings, maintenance agreements, operator and maintenance manuals, and evidence of proper disposal of surplus materials before final payment authorization.

C. Topsoil: Top layer of the soil profile consisting of existing native surface topsoil or existing in-place surface soil; the zone where plant roots grow.
D. Topsoil: Top layer of the soil profile consisting of existing native surface topsoil or existing in-place surface soil; the zone where plant roots grow. Its appearance is generally friable, pervious, and black or a darker shade of brown, gray, or red than underlying subsoil; reasonably free of subsoil, clay lumps, gravel, and other objects larger than 2 inches in diameter; and free of weeds, roots, toxic materials, or other nonsoil materials.
E. Vegetation: Trees, shrubs, groundcovers, grass, and other plants.
1.3 MATERIAL OWNERSHIP
A. Except for materials indicated to be stockpiled or otherwise remain Owner's property, cleared materials shall become Contractor's property and shall be removed from Project site.
