9.2 Returning Seals for Repair;
Hazard Communication Requirements
These instructions are general in nature. It is assumed that the installer is familiar with seals and certainly with the requirements of their plant for the successful use of mechanical seals. If in doubt, get assistance from someone in the plant who is familiar with seals or delay the installation until a seal representative is available. All necessary auxiliary arrangements for successful operation (heating, cooling, flushing) as well as safety devices must be employed. These decisions are to be made by the user. The decision to use this seal or any other Chesterton seal in a particular service is the customer’s responsibility.
Transport and store seals in their original packaging.
Mechanical seals contain components that may be subject to alteration and ageing. It is therefore important to observe the following conditions for storage:
• Dust free environment
• Moderately ventilated at room temperature
• Avoid exposure to direct sunlight and heat
Do not touch the mechanical seal for any reason while it is operating. Lockout or uncouple the driver prior to personal contact with the seal. Do not touch the mechanical seal while it is in contact with hot or cold fluids. Ensure that all the mechanical seal materials are compatible with the process fluid. This will prevent possible personal injury.
• For elastomers, storage conditions should conform to ISO 2230; particularly storage temperatures between 15°C (59°F) and 25°C (77°F). If stored outside these ranges, the seal assembly or spare parts should be unboxed in a clean environment, with ambient temperature within the previously stated ranges, and allowed to recover for at least 1 hour prior to installation. Failure to follow this step can impact the performance of the seal.

If practical, place the dial indicator tip on the end of the shaft sleeve or on a step in the shaft to measure end play. Alternately push and pull the shaft in the axial direction. If the bearings are in good condition, end play should not exceed 0,13 mm (.005").
Remove all sharp corners, burrs, and scratches on the shaft, especially in areas where the O-Ring will slide, and polish if necessary to achieve a 0,8 micron (32 microinch) Ra finish.
Make sure the shaft or sleeve diameter is within 0,05 mm (.002") of nominal.
Use a dial indicator to measure the shaft runout in the area where the seal will be installed. Runout should not exceed 0,001 mm TIR per millimeter (.001 inch TIR per inch) of shaft diameter.
If possible, attach a base dial indicator to the shaft and rotate both the indicator and shaft slowly while reading the runout of the stuffing box face. Misalignment of the stuffing box face relative to the shaft should not exceed 0,005 mm TIR per mm (.005 in per inch) of shaft diameter.
The stuffing box face must be flat and smooth enough to seal the gland. Surface roughness should be 3,2 microns (125 microinch) Ra maximum for gaskets and 0,8 micron (32 microinch) Ra for O-Rings. Steps between halves of split case pumps should be machined flat. Make sure the stuffing box is clean and clear along it’s entire length.

1. Rotate the shaft by hand, if possible, to ensure no metal-to-metal contact within the seal. A slight drag may be found due to the seal faces and the centering buttons but the shaft should rotate freely.
2. Attach appropriate plumbing/environmental controls to the seal. Take all necessary precautions and follow normal safety procedures before starting the equipment.
3. Depending on how carefully the seal components were handled during installation, split seals may drip on startup.
For example, greasy fingerprints on the faces or misaligned face splits may cause leakage. This type of leakage usually decreases and stops over a period of time. If the leakage remains steady, check O-Rings and gaskets for proper installation and check the faces for chips, scratches and proper alignment.
Please Contact Chesterton Mechanical Seal Application Engineering for assistance regarding split seals.
Ensure that the equipment is electrically isolated. If the equipment has been used on toxic or hazardous fluids, ensure that the equipment is correctly decontaminated and made safe prior to commencing work. Ensure that the pump is isolated and check that the stuffing box is drained from any fluid and pressure is fully released. Disassemble the 442C split seal and remove from equipment in the reverse order from installation instructions. Incase of disposal, ensure the local regulations and requirements for disposal or recycling of the different components in the seal are adhered to.
Use only Chesterton original spare parts. Use of non-original spare parts represents risk of failure, danger to persons/ equipment and voids the product warranty.
Spare Parts Kit can be purchased from Chesterton, referencing the recorded seal data from cover page.

442C Installation Troubleshooting Guide
The 442C Cartridge Split Mechanical Seal incorporates technical advancements that significantly increase seal performance and reliability; and simplify seal installation. When installing the 442C, as with any sealing device, familiarity with the proper installation procedure optimizes reliable sealing at equipment start-up. Installation videos are available at: www.chesterton.com/442C_Videos.
Chesterton split seals are designed to be leak free. However, due to variable equipment and operating conditions, some leakage may occur during the startup period. Typically, the leakage diminishes or stops as the seal faces and elastomers conform to their matting surfaces.
If leakage is greater than 60 drops per minute, confirm that the equipment and operating installation conditions are within recommended specification (pump sleeves sealed properly, etc.). If seal installation is the probable cause, then this guide can be used to correct the source of the seal leakage. This guide references sections from the 442C Cartridge Split Seal Installation, Operating and Maintenance Instructions, Rev. 6.
NOTE: Make sure the equipment and the operating conditions are within the established seal operating parameters. Record the source of the leakage as this may be helpful in determining the corrective action required. Record if the leakage follows the shaft rotation.

PROBLEM CHECK SOLUTION
Seal leakage at the gland splits Adjustment of the gland socket head cap screws and stuffing box bolts can affect the gland split leakage.
Make adjustments and if leakage continues, remove gland assembly from equipment and perform the following inspections.
Ensure gland split gaskets are seated properly in their grooves.
Inspect gaskets/O-Rings for cuts or nicks.
If gaskets can still be used, re-install gaskets or replace with new per Section 9.0, Step 38.
Seal leakage from stuffing box gasket area
Ensure the gland is properly seated against the stuffing box face surface. Ensure the stuffing box bolts are torqued to the proper values per Section 5.0 Step 18, Table 5.
Ensure the stuffing box face surface has no steps or potential leak paths on the stuffing box face surface. Refer to Section 4.0 for stuffing box condition requirements.
Rework stuffing box gasket surface to ensure its condition is adequate to seal.
Refer to Section 4.0 for stuffing box condition requirements.
Ensure the stuffing box gasket is in its proper position. Refer to Section 9.0, image in Step 28.
Reposition or replace gasket per Section 9.0, Step 28.
Seal leakage from shaft area which does not follow shaft rotation
Remove gland assembly only (do not remove rotary holder from equipment) and perform the following inspections:
Inspect the stationary seal ring split lines, focusing on possible chips at the O-Ring area.
Any chips in the O-Ring area could affect seal leakage. Replace seal ring per Section 9.0, Steps 34 through 37.
Ensure that the stationary seal ring splits are greased. Clean carefully and apply a thin film of grease to both split surfaces per Section 5.0, Step 10.
Ensure stationary O-Ring splits are flush with stationary seal ring splits. Reposition the O-Ring per Section 9.0, Steps 34 through 37.
Check rotary seal ring for scratches or chips on the sealing surface. If scratches and chips on the seal ring exceed 20% of the sealing surface cross-section install a new rotary seal ring per Section 9.0, Steps 22 and 24.
Ensure the gap between the rotary holder splits are equal on both sides (Reference Section 5.0, Step 5).
If splits are not equal on both sides, adjust the holder socket head cap screws per Section 5.0, Steps 3 through 4. Caution: During this procedure the set screws must be loosened and then retightened after holder socket head cap screws are adjusted; reference Section 5.0, Step 7.
Inspect rotary seal ring splits for misalignment or a step. To correct a step on the splits of the rotary seal ring perform the following steps:
Install the installation P-spacer on the holder. Loosen up the holder socket head cap screws half a turn. Loosen up the set screws half a turn. Press on the high side of the face split until it is level with the lower side. Re-tighten the socket head cap screws (make sure the gap between the holder splits is even on both sides). Re-tighten the set screws. Remove the installation spacers. Clean the faces. Reinstall the gland assembly per installation instructions, Section 5.0, Step 9 through 19.
Inspect the rotary seal ring to make sure it is properly seated in the holder (even protrusion).
If rotary seal ring is not seated in the holder, reinstall per Section 9.0, Steps 22 through 24.
Seal leakage from shaft area which follows shaft rotation
Once holder is removed from equipment:
Check the condition of the shaft at the O-Ring location. Reference Section 4.0 for shaft condition requirements.
Repair/replace shaft per equipment manufacturers requirements.
Ensure rotary seal ring O-Rings are flush with rotary seal ring splits. Reposition O-Rings per Section 4.0, Step 12, and Section 9.0, Steps 21 through 24.
Ensure rotary holder split gaskets are seated properly in their grooves.
Inspect gaskets for cuts or nicks.
If gaskets are in good condition, re-install gaskets or replace with new per Section 9.0, Step 25.
Check O-Ring condition. Replace damaged O-Rings per Section 9.0, Steps 21 through 24.

Section 3
Inflatable Safety Seal General Installation Instructions
Description
The Chesterton Inflatable Safety Seal is an on-demand static shaft sealing device. This contained pneumatic inflatable bladder assembly is used in conjunction with a mechanical seal.
The ISS plate firmly affixes to the process equipment, and the mechanical seal is then bolted to it. The ISS is designed to act as a static seal in the event of unacceptable mechanical seal leakage. It can also function as an interim static seal during mechanical seal rebuild. The robust system adds an element of security and flexibility to any sealing application.
Typical uses: Side and bottom entry mixers and agitators, stern tubes, and larger pumps.
CAUTION: The ISS is NOT to be inflated on a rotating shaft!
Preparation
1. Read these instructions completely prior to installing equipment.
2. Installing personnel should be familiar with equipment operation and pressure swings of the particular stuffing box involved.
3. Air connections to the ISS plate are 1/4" NPT. An optional Schradder (tire-style) valve is include in the packaging. This valve can also be used for inflation via a manual pump if a compressed air source is not available.
4. Two pressure gauges and a stop valve are required to properly monitor the ISS during operation/inflation.
Follow this schematic:
5. To inflate the bladder to the proper differential pressure, the following must be known:
PBL = bladder inflation pressure PSB= live stuffing box pressure exposed to the ISS.
Do not rely on the bladder inflation port gauge to read stuffing box pressure!
6. CAUTION: When the plastic shipping plug is removed, ensure that dirt, liquid, or other contamination does not enter the inflation port.
7. Inspect the visible area of the bladder for any nicks or other obvious damage that may inhibit proper sealing. While handling, it is important that the user not expose the bladder to sharp debris that may get caught in between the bladder and plate housing.
Check the stuffing box.
1. The stuffing box face surface finish must be a maximum of 125 micro-inches RMS (3,2 microns) for the ISS plate gasket to seal.
2. Split case pumps will sometimes cause a step (misalignment) to occur on the stuffing box face. This step must be machined flat within 0.001 in (0,03 mm).
3. Make sure the stuffing box is clean and clear along it’s entire length.
4. If possible, attach a base dial indicator to the shaft and rotate both the indicator and shaft slowly while reading the runout of the stuffing box face. Misalignment of the stuffing box face relative to the shaft should not exceed (.002) (0,06 mm) TIR per inch of shaft diameter.
Installation
1. The ISS is to be placed in between the stuffing box and the mechanical seal.
2. Bolt the ISS to the equipment stuffing box using the provided counter bore through-holes or slots. Insert plastic shim centering gauges between the shaft and plate ID. Tighten the bolts evenly. Remove the gauges.
(Note that the through-holes or slots and their bolt circle is customized to each application.)
3. The ISS will now act as the new surface for mounting the mechanical seal. The ISS has tapped holes on a specific bolt circle that will fit a Chesterton mechanical seal. Unless ordered otherwise, the standard ISS plate has tapped holes to fit a Chesterton 442 or 442M Split Seal.
4. Install the mechanical seal by following the seal installation instructions.

Inflation / Operation
1. CAUTION: The ISS is to be inflated while the shaft is at rest! The ISS is not designed to operate on a rotating shaft. Failure will occur if the shaft is rotating while the bladder is inflated.
2. It is critical that the user know the process pressure inside the equipment stuffing box.
3. A properly installed ISS requires inflation prior to seal disassembly.
Normal inflation pressure is recommended to be approximately 15 psi above the pressure in the stuffing box. As the bladder inflates, it will seal between the plate, shaft, and stuffing box. This action isolates the mechanical seal from the process fluid pressure.
When sealing very low pressure fluids, note that the first 25-30 psig of inflation is necessary to overcome the initial bladder stretch and establish sealing contact to the shaft.
To determine whether the ISS bladder is holding pressure, close the valve as seen in the above schematic. Disconnect the source of inflation at the disconnect shown. To ensure bladder sealing stability, the pressure should hold steady without change for approximately 10 minutes.
4. As a safety precaution to verify that the ISS is sealing, the following procedure is required:
Before removal of the attached mechanical seal, remove the mechanical seal’s flush port plug (or piping connection) to drain any remaining process fluid left in the cavity between the ISS and mechanical seal. This procedure also verifies that the inflated ISS bladder is properly sealing and not bypassing fluid. If in doubt, wait for a period of several minutes to verify that the inflated ISS is sealing.
Non-conformance with the stated chemical compatibility or operating parameters for the Inflatable Safety Seal may result in damage to equipment and/or personal injury.
5. The maximum stuffing box pressure is 100 psig. The maximum bladder inflation pressure is 115 psig.
Contact Chesterton Applications Engineering if using higher process pressures or vacuum.
6. Once assured that the bladder is sealing, the attached mechanical seal can be removed. Take care not to puncture the seal bladder while using tools to disassemble the mechanical seal. Do not attempt to rotate the shaft while the bladder is inflated.
Maintenance & Troubleshooting
1. When in use, the ISS bladder is exposed to the pressure swings from both the process fluid and inflation.
Should the bladder become damaged in any way, replace it with a new Chesterton ISS bladder.
2. If the bladder does not hold inflation pressure, look for the following:
A. a leaking air supply connection, fitting, or valve, B. physical damage to the bladder, C. damage to the small o-ring (-011) around the brass stem attached to the bladder.
3. If the inflated bladder is holding pressure but bypassing process fluid, it is possible that debris could be pinched between the shaft and bladder. If no debris is found consider increasing the bladder inflation pressure. Do not exceed an inflation-stuffing box differential of 30 psi/2 bar, and do not exceed the rated 115 psig inflation pressure.
If sealing is not effected at this point, contact Chesterton Applications Engineering.
4. When the ISS is removed from the process equipment, the bladder should be inspected for any damage.
The bladder can be removed from the plate for inspection. Also inspect the stem o-ring for any damage.
5. Upon bladder re-installation, make sure that no debris or sharp burrs have entered inside the plate housing. Also make sure that the bladder stem is seated all the way into the socket.
6. When installing a new bladder use a silicone based grease (non-petroleum based) to assist proper seating into the ISS plate.

CAUTIONS
These instructions are general in nature. It is assumed that the installer is familiar with seals and certainly with the requirements of their plant for the successful use of mechanical seals. If in doubt, get assistance from someone in the plant who is familiar with seals or delay the installation until a seal representative is available. All necessary auxiliary arrangements for successful operation (heating, cooling, flushing) as well as safety devices must be employed. These decisions are to be made by the user. The chemical listing is intended as a general reference for this seal only.
The decision to use this seal or any other CHESTERTON seal or system in a particular service is the customer's responsibility.
