Power Amplifiers • TCB-60 Ii 25 /250

~ BOGEN® Tech-craFT.

A DIVISION OF LEAR SIEGLER, INC.

DESCRIPTION

The Tech-craIT TCB Series Power Amplifiers are profe:.· sionaJ. rugged, aJJ solid-state audio amplifiers especially de signed for those applications requiring rugh audio quaJity and continuous operation. The amplifiers supply their respective output power ratings at less than I% total harmonic distortion from 25 to 22.000 Hz. An input signal of only 250 millivolts is required for full rated output. The inputs may be balanced with the use of accessory TL- IOK Transformer. Residual hum and noise is at least 86 dB below rated outputs, and output regulation is better than I dB from no load to full load.

The TCB Series amplifiers can drive a variety of load impe dances simply by changing the arrangement of jumper wires on the output terminal strips. These outputs include balanced or unbalanced 25. 50 and 70 volts. 16 volts direct unbalanced, or 40. 65 and 90 volts unbalanced. The amplifiers can drive a load directly, and deliver 65 watts (TCB-60), 135 watts (TCB-125) or 275 watts (TCB-250) rms continuous power at less than 1% THD from 25 to 22.000 Hz into 4, 2 or l ohm, respectively.

The power amplifiers can safely drive any recommended load continuously. and in fact will continue to deliver power into adverse loads (including gross overloads) without major increases in distortion. They will even operate continuously into a short-circuit with no damage to the amplifiers. Three LED indicators are provided to show whether the amplifiers are operating in a Normal. Peak. or Limiting mode. The TCB Series is also thermally protected to prevent damage due to excessively high temperatures. However. the amplifiers will deliver their full rated power outputs continuously even at 55•c (131°Fl. In addition to thermostatic protection. failure preventive devices include electronic overload limiting and a rear-panel ac-line fuse.

MODEL TL-1 OK TRANSFORMER

The Tech-craIT TL- IOK line matching transformer provides a balanced 10.000-ohm input for high-impedance sources.

CONTROLS AND INDICATORS

INDICATORS

POWER. When the ac power switch is turned on, the power indicator will light. This indicator also lights when the amplifier is connected to a live auxiliary de source.

SIGNAL. There are three output signal indicators, two for output voltage level and one for overload. The two output voltage indicators operate regardless of loading.

Normal. The NORMAL indicator lights when the voltage is from approximately one-third of maximum to maximum. .

Peak. This indicator lights when the output voltage reaches appro1drnately one-half of maximum. The NORMAL indi cator remains on whenever the PEAK indicator lights.

Limit. This indicator lights if there is an output current overload condition. The other signal indicators may or may not remain on when the LIMIT indicator lights. Occasional flickering of the LIMIT indicator at full output may be ignored.

CONTROLS

LOW-CUT FILTER SWITCH. This switch, located on the rear of the amplifier, provides 5 dB attenuation at I 00 Hz.

INPUT LEVEL CONTROL. This control, located on the rear of the amplifier, is used to adjust the output to the required level. Maximum sensitivity is obtained with con trol fully clockwise. An approximate adjustment can be made by observing the front panel signal indicators.

UNPACKING

The power amplifier was carefully checked before leaving the factory. Inspect both the amplifier and its shipping container for indications of improper handling.

Report any equipment damage immediately to the distribu tor from whom the unit was purchased. If the amplifier was shipped to you, notify and place your claim with the shipping carrier without delay.

"Nore Do nor discard the small envelope packed with rhe amplifier.

EQUIPMENT CONNECTIONS

AC POWER CONNECTIONS. The ac line cord has a three-prong plug which should be plugged into a three-wire, grounded 120-volt, 60 Hz outlet. This automatically will ground the chassis. If a grounded three-wire outlet is not available, install an adapter (e.g., Leviton No. 5017) and connect the adapter pigtail to a reliable electrical system ground (such as grounded wall-plate screw, separate ground wire, etc). The power transformer has primary taps to accommodate line voltages of 120 Vac or 240 Vac. Refer to the Maintenance section for further instructions.

AUXILIARY DC POWER CONNECTIONS. The unit may be powered from a dual (+ and-) 28-volt supply, such as four fully charged automotive-type storage batteries in series, with center tap. The unit is supplied with a three-pin male plug (in envelope) for connecting an external de supply to the EXTERNAL DC OPERATION receptacle (see figure 3). The power switch is not functional on de operation, but the power on indicator will light. An emergency battery supply may be left permanently con nected to the amplifier via the circuit shown in figure 1, which also provides a trickle charge for the batteries. It is important to provide fuses or circuit breakers for the de circuit.

Caurion Obsen•e polariry on all de power connecrions.

INPUT CONNECTIONS. There are two sets of input ter minals for accepting either high-impedance unbalanced, or high or low-impedance balanced inputs.

HI-Z Unbalanced Input. A high impedance (50,000-ohm) unbalanced input is available between the Hl-Z and GND input terminals (see figure 3). The required input level for full rated output is 250 mV.

Balanced Input. A balanced input is provided at the BAL INPUT terminal~ (see figure 3). The input requires installa tion of a matching transformer on printed circuit board A I (see figure 2), :-"hich is accessible by removing the top cover from the unit. Install either a Model TL-600 for low-impedance (500/600 ohm) or a Model TL-IOK for high-impedance (I 0,000 ohms) input.

MIXER-PREAMPLIFIER

a::;7610-01-<;E9-5101 TFhi~

CEJE-CIM

Your new Bogen Model CDM Active Mixer-Preamplifier is a rugged, professional-quality unit manufactured to ex· acting standards and designed to give you many years of reliable, trouble-free service.

The CDM has six balanced, low-impedance, transformer· isolated microphone inputs. Each is preceded by a fixed attenuator pad (switch~electable on the rear panel) en· abling Channels I through 4 to also accept 0 dBm, 600-ohm line inputs or high level (up to J volt rms) instrument mic inputs, and Channels 5 and 6 to also accept high-impedance auxiliary inputs. Additionally, Channel 6 will accommodate a magnetic phonograph input. All inputs are combined on an active mixing bus. essentially eliminating interaction between channel gain controls, minimizing residual mixing bus noise and providing constant preamplifier gain (con· stant input sensitivity) as channels are added.

The Model CDM has a rated output (transformer isolated) of +18 dBm into a 600-ohm load at less than I% THO, and a frequency response of ±1 dB, 20-20,000 Hz at

Model COM rated outpuL Microphone sensitivity is 300 µV and noise is 57 dB below rated output.

Separate bass and treble controls provide up to 12 dB cut or boost at SO Hz and I S,000 Hz, respectively. A booster level output is incorporated to drive high impedance booster amplifier inputs. The illuminated VU meter has a meter range switch to set the zero VU indicator at either +4 dBm or +IO dBm. An acoustic equalizer or re verb may be inserted before the fmal amplifier circuits via the rear panel accessory jacks.

A built-in circuit provides precedence and/or remote volume control over Channels S and 6. The master volume level may also be remotely controlled. The six channel input connections are made via 3-pin female microphone connectors. Terminal strips accommodate the 600-ohm out· put and auxiliary de power connections. RCA phone jacks are provided for the mag phono input, booster level output and the accessory connection. The CDM operates from either 120/240. Vac, S0/60 Hz or +24-28 Vdc power so wees.

INSTALLATION

UNPACKING

Your CDM was carefully checked before leaving the fac tory. Inspect both the unit and its shipping container care fully for indications of improper handling. Report any dam'age immediately to the distributor from whom your unit was purchased. It if was shipped to you, notify the shipping carrier without delay and place your claim.

POWER AND GROUNDING

Primary AC power. The ac line cord has a three-prong plug which should be plugged into a three-wire, grounded I 20V, 60 Hz outlet. It is important to ground the unit. If such an outlet is not available install an adapter (Leviton No. 5017, for example), and connect the pigtail lead to the grounded wall-plate mounting screw. If this screw is not grounded, connect a wire from the ground terminal of your unit to a conduit pipe or other electrical system ground.

Auxiliary DC power. The CDM may be powered from an external 24 to 28 VDC supply that need not be discon nected when the unit is operated from an AC source. The front panel power switch will disconnect both sources when switched to off. Connect DC source to EXT DC terminals on rear panel terminal strip.

Caution

Observe polarity on DC power connections. Unit will not function if polarity is reversed.

240-volt conversion. The CDM has a power transformer which permits operation from a 240 Vac, 50/60 Hz power source. To convert to 240V operation, locate the power circuit, cut brown and yellow wires, and solder both to the vacant tie strip. Refer to Note 2, Figure 4. . •

INPUT CONNECTIONS

MICROPHONE/LINE/ AUXILIARY

Up to six fow-impedance microphones may be con nected via the three-pin, quick- connect sockets on the rear panel Channels l through 4 alternately accept 60Ck>hm line inputs or high level instrument mic inputs and Channels 5 and 6 will accomodate high- impedance auxiliary inputs.

Move the selector switch located above each input recep tacle to MIC, LINE or AUX, as required.

Use two-conducror cable terminated in a three-pin male connector (use single- conductor shielded cable for aux inputs). Refer to figure I for connecting balanced or un balanced lines.

MAGPHONO

The output of a phonograph using a magnetic cartridge may be connected via the MAG PHO NO jack to Channel 6.

Use single-conductor shielded cable terminated in an RCA phono plug. An internal adjustment is required when a mag phono is connected. Remove the top cover and locate switch SI on the printed circuit board. Move the switch to the PHONO position. Replace the cover. The phono output is regulated by the front-panel MIC 6 control knob.

ACCESSORX

Accessory equipment, such as an equalizer, reverberator, etc. may be connected at the rear panel ACCESSORY input jacks • .Remove the link and connect input and output leads or' accessory equipment with single-conductor cable termin ated in RCA phono plugs. All inputs to the CDM will be affected by the accessory unit.

OUTPUT CONNECTIONS

LINE

A +18 dBm transformer-isolated output is available at the terminal strip marked + 18 dBm OUTPUT .on the rear panel. For balanced lines, connect two-conductor shielded c'llble to the HI and LO 60Ck>hm tenninals. The center tap (CT) term.iiial should be grounded. For un balanced lines, connect ·cables to the HI and LO ternri nals and connect the LO side to the ground terminal.

60GltN 100& 'O~ tQUl'll'LE.MT
