About this file
This document is a Preliminary Table of Requirements for the U.S. Coast Guard's Border Security Boat – Shallow Water River, detailing specifications for a shore-based boat designed for law enforcement operations on the Rio Grande. The boat must be 18-22 feet long with an 8-ft 6-inch maximum beam, capable of operating in riverine environments with as little as 2 inches of water, withstanding frequent river bottom contact, and performing in air temperatures ranging from 32F to 110F.
Key technical requirements include a top speed of 35+ knots (28 knots cruising), ability to maintain 15+ knots against river current, and positive flotation for hull damage protection. The boat will feature a monohull high-density polyethylene construction, center console, hydraulic steering, single gasoline outboard propulsion, and a fleet mix of 20 jet propulsion and 5 propeller-driven boats. Additional specifications cover lighting, a cable bar for crew protection, mesh rigging for gear storage, and trailer compatibility for highway and gravel road transportation. The primary mission focuses on Drug Interdiction (DI) and Migrant Interdiction (MI) operations.
