Text Question Answer

60 Att 2, Sec 660- 1.4.14

660-1.4.14 [0001] Seats shall have a minimum forward knee clearance from the console of 18 inches in accordance with MIL-STD 1472 Section 5.10.3.4.4 Fig 64.

Can the USCG please explain how the Minimum Knee Clearance Dimension is to be measured in this application? The diagram referenced uses a writing surface shelf as the measuring point. A helm operator’s console does not have a similar writing surface shelf extending towards the operator. Using the waist of the operator, as a measuring point for this requirement drives the operator farther away from the console and conflicts with reachability requirements.

Because of the unique nature of marine helm consoles and [redacted] shock mitigating seating, and the lack of a comparable specification in MIL-STD-1472, we would like to request the USCG consider removal of 660-1.4.14. We believe that 660-1.4.13 (minimum thigh clearance) is sufficient to ensure the operator has clear leg space in front of and below the console.

Attachment 2, Section 660-1.4.13 and 660-1.1.14 have been deleted.

Attachment 2, Section 660-1.4.2, has been revised to clarifiy the knee, leg, and thigh clearances.
