Construction Specifications Summary

This document is a Construction Specifications file for a pre-purchase centrifugal water chiller unit for Argonne National Laboratory in Lemont, Illinois. The specification details the technical requirements for furnishing a water-cooled chiller with a variable speed, oil-free centrifugal compressor to replace existing equipment in Building 350 (Phase II project). The new chiller module must be fully and natively compatible with two existing modular Trane TACW110AT3546-MINIMOD chiller units, operating as a single integrated chiller plant without requiring gateways, protocol converters, or custom programming—only manufacturer-provided firmware updates. The unit will be delivered to Building 046 at the Argonne facility. Acceptable manufacturers include Trane Company, YORK International Corporation, and Multistack.

The specification requires the chiller to use R-513a refrigerant with an oil-free centrifugal compressor featuring variable-inlet guide-vane capacity control. Heat exchangers must be shell-and-tube design with ASME labeling, copper tubes, and carbon steel shells. The chiller must include a stand-alone, microprocessor-based control panel with BACnet MS/TP protocol, complete with safety interlocks, flow switches, and motorized isolation valves. The manufacturer must provide field start-up services, controls integration, operator training, and a minimum of 48 hours of commissioning assistance. Factory testing must comply with ARI 550/590, ASHRAE 15, ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code standards, UL 1995, and Green Seal GS-31 certification. Bids without complete product data and shop drawings will be rejected. The warranty covers one year on components and five years on the compressor for defects in materials or workmanship.
