About this file
This document summarizes proposed improvements to Cima Road and several other roads located in Mojave National Preserve in California. The Federal Highway Administration, through its Central Federal Lands Highway Division, is coordinating with the National Park Service to improve approximately 17.1 miles of Cima Road, which includes full depth reclamation and resurfacing of the existing pavement to a consistent 26-foot width, minor horizontal and vertical realignments, reinforced low water crossings, and improved safety features like rumble strips, signage and pavement markings. Low water crossings will typically include buried concrete barriers and riprap revetment. Improvements are also proposed for Kelbaker Road involving riprap shoulder stabilization and asphalt patching, and for Lanfair and Cedar Canyon Roads consisting of two low water crossings and a slope stabilization area. The project is located in a remote area approximately 75 miles from Las Vegas, and construction is estimated to take 12-18 months due to environmental constraints.

CONFINEMENT SYSTEMS
Construction Requirements
Add the following paragraph:
629.05 Wattles/Sediment Logs: Provide certified weed free logs that consist of drainage filter made of curled aspen wood excelsior and rolled into a cylindrical shape with a consistent width of fibers evenly distributed throughout the cylinder. Provide logs that are a minimum of 9 inches and maximum of 12 inches in diameter. Provide logs encased in 100% natural fiber biodegradable netting, photodegradable materials will not be permitted. Provide certification that all material in the log is weed free.
Place sediment logs in a shallow trench the depth of which shall be 1/3 the diameter of the log.
Secure the log every 2 linear feet across the length of the log with a 24-inch wooden 1-inch x 1-inch (or larger stakes) driven a minimum of 14 inches from backfilled grade or 10 inches from the bottom of the wattle, into the ground. Do not use wooden stakes that are severely split. When placing more than one log in a continuous section the logs should overlap 2’. Install perpendicular to the contour, in a staggered overlapping pattern so that an unnatural pattern cannot be detected.
Erosion Control Blankets: Furnish an erosion control blanket composed of certified weed free processed all-natural fibers (straw is not acceptable) mechanically bound between two all-natural fiber nettings to form a continuous matrix with a minimum dry weight of 0.4 pounds per square yard according to ASTM D 6475. Utilize U-shaped wire staples with a minimum of 12-inch-long legs and 8-gauge thickness to facilitate installation without bending. Ensure materials are protected from weather and/or handling damage.
