16 Can the Asphalt Paving be performed in a single layer per the specified 3" depth? Asphalt Concrete Pavement Type 1, this task concerns that paving 1.5 inches (compacted) may compromise material layers when the asphalt compactors roll the asphalt material, producing what is knowing in the industry Asphalt Checking or Roller Checking. (Checking; can be defined as short transverse cracks, usually, 1 to 4 inches in length and 1 to 3 inches apart, which occur in the asphalt concrete mat) Other factors can contribute to Asphalt Checking, such as the deflection of the pavement structure under the compaction equipment, deficiency in the asphalt mix design, the asphalt mix tends to shove by the roller instead of tucking under the drum of the compacting equipment, etc.) Another concern is that the first asphalt mat layer of 1.5 inches compacted may be compromised by the Asphalt Paving Machine's weight and the Asphalt Delivering Trucks weight.
DAP's recommendation is to place the asphalt mat as a single 3" inches compacted layer, as a single lane from Center Line to the edge of the road.
The Asphalt Paving cannot be performed in a single layer; the plans call for two equal lifts of asphalt be placed. Refer to the typical section.
Provide an asphalt mix design that will meet or exceed project specifications
