About this file
This document contains questions and answers from a pre-bid meeting for a federal construction contract. The project involves building improvements to a public trail located on Bureau of Reclamation property in Sacramento County, California, including construction of a pedestrian bridge over Laguna Creek, an open-air shelter house, asphalt patching and microsurfacing, signing, pavement markings, and other miscellaneous work. Questions were asked to clarify requirements for the steel bridge safety system, acceptable deck slope for ADA compliance, and determination of anchor bolt embedment. Responses provided modifications to specification sections and noted that anchor bolt details would be determined by the selected fabricator during design.

Questions and Answers during Advertisement for CA FTBR FSTR (2), Folsom South Trail Improvements PH II
May 21, 2020
Questions Answers 1 Item (e) on page E-32 of Specification Section 555. Steel
Structures indicates a welded wire fabric safety system, however item (f) on E-32 and the plans (sheet S7) describe steel safety rails. Can you please clarify what the desired safety system is?
Delete Section 555.03A(e) – WWF not required.
2 Item (e) on page E-33 of Specification Section 555. Steel Structures calls for the deck to be cambered between 1.4% to 1.7% of the span length, this amount of camber results in a deck slope that exceeds 5% on the low end of the bridge and will cause the bridge to not be ADA complaint.
Is ADA compliancy a requirement for this bridge? If so, can the bridge camber be reduced such that the maximum deck slope does not exceed 5%?
555.03A General.
Design criteria is as follows:
(e) Delete the subsection and substitute the following.
(e) Camber shall be provided such that the finished deck surface is approximately level or slightly up-cambered at a maximum of 1% of the span length (a sag shall not be allowed).
3 Sheet S5 does not provide the anchor rod embedment requirement. While the quantity, diameter, projection, and grade are typically provided by the bridge manufacturer as they are dependent of the bridge loads. The anchor rod embedment is typically provided by the foundation designer, as that is a factor of rebar spacing and location and edge distance. Can the foundation designer provide guidance as to what the necessary anchor rod embedment is?
No guidance can be provided until a structure design has been submitted for review. As noted on sheet S5, Note
1: “SUPERSTRUCTURE ANCHOR/BEARING
INFORMATION IS SHOWN FOR INFORMATION ONLY.
FINAL ANCHOR/BEARING TYPE, DIMENSIONS, AND
LOCATION SHALL BE PROVIDED BY THE
SUPERSTRUCTURE FABRICATOR.” AS SUCH, THE
NUMBER, TYPE AND EMBEDMENT OF ANCHOR BOLTS
IS DETERMINED DURING THE DESIGN OF THE
SUPERSTRUCTURE BY THE FABRICATOR.
