Questions and Answers

1. Pavement Section / Asphalt Thickness: The specifications indicate that asphalt base courses are to be placed in the number of lifts and thicknesses shown on the Construction Drawings; however, we have not identified a clear replacement pavement section showing the required base-course thickness, surface-course thickness, or total compacted HMA thickness. Could you please confirm the required pavement section and total asphalt thickness?

Answer: Asphalt materials, placement, compaction, and allowable lift thicknesses shall comply with Section 32 12 00 and the current GDOT Standard Specifications, including GDOT Section 400, Hot Mix Asphaltic Concrete Construction. The specified surface mix is 9.5 mm Superpave Type 2. GDOT Section 400 permits a compacted lift thickness of 1-1/8 inch minimum to 1-1/2 inch maximum for this mix. The total pavement section/thickness will be confirmed by the Engineer.

2. Existing Pavement Thickness / Milling Depth: The project documents indicate milling/removal of the existing asphalt pavement down to subgrade. Is any existing pavement thickness information, pavement core data, or existing-condition information available for estimating the milling and disposal quantities?

Answer: Historical As-Built Drawings SO-D-102337-C05 indicate that the pavement consisted of 2 inches of asphalt wearing course over 8 inches of compacted crushed stone base on compacted subgrade. This information is a reference only. No pavement core data is available to verify the current pavement thickness. Contractor shall field verify actual conditions during removal.

3. Subgrade / Base Repairs: The specifications require repair of unsuitable base/subgrade conditions as necessary, but no quantity is provided. Please clarify whether a specific allowance or quantity should be included for subgrade/base repairs, or how additional repairs discovered after milling will be handled.

Answer: Historical As-Built Drawings SO-D-102337-C05 indicate an original pavement section of 8 inches of compacted crushed stone base over the subgrade. No predetermined quantity or allowance for unsuitable base/subgrade repairs is provided. Conditions encountered following pavement removal shall be evaluated in the field. The Contractor shall notify the RE immediately if unsuitable material is requiring removal beyond the indicated limits in accordance with section 31 00 00.

4. Vehicle Detection Loops: Please confirm the number, dimensions, configuration, and testing requirements for the pavement detection loops that are to be replaced or restored. If available, please also provide information regarding the existing controller/interface and current operating condition of the loops.

Answer: There are no drawings that require detection loop to be replaced. There is no work that is going to be done in the guardhouse. This is for the Childcare Center.
