About this file

This document is a Questions and Answers (Q&A) record dated May 06, 2026, for Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) solicitation 697DCK-26-R-00251 for ADS (Addison Air Traffic Control Tower) Cab Glass Replacement, along with supporting specification and technical documentation.

The project requires replacement of fogged Cab Insulated Glass Units 2, 3, 4, and 10 on the ATCT tower. Original glass specifications are documented in "Original Installation 08800," with as-built replacement drawings provided in "ADS-ATCT-A03-S1-C" and "ADS-ATCT-A03-S2-B." Contractor operations must comply with FAA line-of-sight restrictions—cranes and lifts cannot be positioned north or south of the tower. Heavy equipment parking is designated in a specific area shown on the site plan, with the contractor responsible for verifying turning radius. Communication during work will be maintained through the Resident Engineer rather than direct controller contact. The contractor must file FAA Obstruction Evaluation/Airport Airspace Analysis (OE/AAA) forms per Specifications 01 00 00 and 01 10 00 for any crane operations exceeding 20 feet above the tower roof. Tint strips (2" to 3" wide) matching existing conditions should be installed on new cab glass edges if the warranty permits. Glazing specifications (Section 08800) detail Type II insulating glass units for ATCT cabs: 1/2-inch clear float glass panes separated by a dehydrated air space with dark bronze metal separators, double-sealed with polyisoulylene primary seals and polyurethane/silicone secondary seals. A 12-inch capillary/breather tube must be installed in the bottom 1/3 of one vertical edge, remaining open during installation and capped afterward with polyurethane sealant. Installation requirements include neoprene setting blocks, silicone sealant, proper edge clearances, and weatherproof decals indicating breather tube location for future pressure equalization.

ADS Cab Glass Replacement

697DCK-26-R-00251

Questions & Answers

May 06, 2026

1. Is there any specifications of the existing glass type? Response: Original cab glass specification attached “Original Installation 08800” for reference. As-Built Cab glass replacement drawing is attached for reference only “ADS-ATCT-A03-S1-C” and “ADS-ATCT-

A03-S2-B”.

2. Can you please let us know where the fogged up piece of glass is located on the tower.

Response: Cab Insulated Glass Units 2, 3, 4, and 10 are fogging.

3. Can we use the parking lots, on South side of Tower and North of Tower? we need space for crane and for Boom. One can be parked on street. Response: Crane will have to be out of the towers line-of-sight. North and South of the Tower would be in the line-of-sight. Unclear if you are asking about a boom lift, but all lifts cannot be in the line-of-sight.

4. Completion of this project depends on weather, for that reason, all heavy equipment has to stay parked somewhere near the property, will we be able to have a portion of any of parking lots for our equipment, till we complete the job, or, we'll leave parked on the street? Response:

See below area that can be used for contractor vehicle parking heavy equipment overnight parking. The other parking spots are needed by the facility for operations. Contractor must verify turning radius of heavy equipment.

5. During working hours, will a Controller representative with us, or will we be equipped with two way radio to communicate with AT Controllers? Response: Contractor will be in contact with the Resident Engineer.

6. The operating crane will need to be over the height of Tower, at least 20 ft above Tower roof, do we need to notify the FAA authority or it will be coordinated from your side, for the period we'll be working? Response: Contractor must file the FAA Obstruction Evaluation / Airport

Airspace Analysis (OE/AAA) per Specifications 01 00 00 and 01 10 00.

7. Will tint on side of existing cab glass need to be reinstalled? Response: If new cab glass warranty allow for 2” to 3” wide strips of tint to be installed, install 2” to 3” wide strip of tint on cab glass edge to overlap with the cab shades to match existing conditions. Tint to match existing.

PART 3.00 EXECUTION

3.01 PREPARATION:

A. Frames receiving glazing shall be clean, free of oil, grease, dust or other materials. Firmly anchor in place before installing glass.

B. Verify opening sizes at the job site before cutting any glass. Cut glass accurately to fit field measurements. Framing members shall be plumb and vertical, installed without bows or misalignment. Frames shall not be set to be under stress from surrounding construction.

3.02 INSTALLATION, GENERAL:

A. Cut each pane to proper size, allowing a face clearance of 1/8" inch and an edge clearance of 1/4" inch between the glass and the framing members at all perimeters. Avoid contact of glass to metal. Cut glass to produce clean, smooth edges, free of piped or chipped edges.

B. Provide setting blocks at quarter points of glass bearing. Center glass in opening in both horizontal and vertical planes. Provide edge blocks for large panes, which are no less than three (3") inches long and insert near the top and bottom edges of vertical members.

C. Glazing in metal frames with stops shall be made with tape glazing. Cut glazing tape to the full length of the opening and set against permanent stops. Remove protective paper from tape, set glass onto setting blocks and press firmly against tape surface. Seal joints between glazing stop and glass with continuous bead of sealant.

D. Frames furnished with neoprene or vinyl glazing strips shall have glass set in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations to produce a weather-tight joint.

E. At removable stops, provide a 1/4 inch clearance between edge of glazing material and back of glazing rabbet at jambs and head after allowance for setting block or shim thickness at sill. At dry glazing, provide clearance required by design of frame member but not less than 1/4 inch.

SW-1745 08800-6

3.03 INSTALLATION OF GLAZING MATERIAL:

A. CAB GLASS:

Install with breather tube open. Position the end of the tube so that the end of the tube is visible and accessible when the exterior glazing bead cover is removed. Use caution while positioning the tube not to break the seal of the tube at point of penetration of the insulation glass unit. Before installing the glazing bead cover, seal the end of the tube with polyurethane sealant in a manner that the seal can be easily broken. Provide a weatherproof decal adhered to the bead cover as indication of the location of the breather tube. This special requirement is to permit periodic future air pressure equalizing.

B. EXTERIOR THERMAL DOUBLE PANED GLAZING UNITS:

Set units on two (2) neoprene setting blocks which are placed at quarter points. Setting blocks shall be at least six (6") inches longer and 1/8" inch wider than the glass unit. Center glazing unit in opening and install Shore A 50 to 60 neoprene edge blocks, three (3") inches long at each edge. Install silicone sealant to completely seal glass unit.

C. GLAZING PANELS:

Install glazing panels in aluminum frames using the frame manufacturer's neoprene glazing gaskets. Provide flexible setting blocks on the bottom edge, and provide an expansion space per panel manufacturer’s recommendation on each side and top.

3.04 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL:

A. Replace glass and materials that become broken, chipped, cracked or damaged during construction and before substantial completion of building.

B. Where existing work is required to be reglazed, remove existing setting material completely to base glazing frame and reglaze opening as required for a new glazing.

C. Surface scratches shall be cause for rejection of any piece of glass. Iron spots, weld marks, or any defects that confuse vision from Cab shall be defects that require replacement of glass.

3.05 CLEANING:

After painting has been completed, clean and polish glass surfaces, and also any setting moldings and adjoining surfaces which become soiled as a result of glazing operation. Leave job in first class condition.

3.06 SCHEDULES:

Install insulating glazing units as follows:

TYPE I: Glazing for Base Building and ATCT shaft windows.

TYPE II: ATCT Cab only.
