FOREWARD

The purpose of the Engineer's Operating Manual (EOM) is to provide a description of the operating procedures for the ship's machinery plants. The EOM also presents the basic system information for the Heating, Ventilating and Air Condition

System, Electrical System and Piping System for the T -AGOS Ocean Surveillance

Ship.

TIle equipment and systems described herein are supplemented by arrangement plans and flow diagrams to facilitate comprehension of the overall machinery plant. Included are a listing of indicators, alarms, controls and remotely operated valves appearing at the Main Control Station Console (MCSC).

Additional information concerning installation, operation, safety precautions, maintenance procedures and adjustments for the various machinery components can be found in their respective technical manuals.

For related information and background source material used in developing this manual, refer to Chapter 32.

Also, a listing of chapters, figures, tables and abbrevations is located on pages xxii through xxviii.

GENERAL INFORMATION

1.1. GENERAL

T -AGOS I Class, Ocean Surveillance ships are designed for towing a special array known as the Surveillance Towed Array Sensor (SURTASS) •

. The ships are operated by the Military Sealift Command (MSC). The crew members are merchant marine personnel and the SUR TASS System is operated by civilian technicians.

1.3. DESCRIPTION OF MACHINERY PLANT

The machinery plant is equipped with an automatic Control and Monitoring

System including an Event Logger. Additionally, two remote Cathode Ray

Tube (CRT) Monitoring Stations are provided; one in the Pilothouse and one in the Chief Engineer's Stateroom. The Control System is fully automated with

Built In Test Equipment (BITE). Except for starting/stopping the main generators and vital auxiliaries, the machinery spaces are unattended.

The Main Propulsion Plant consists of four constant-speed (1200 RPM)

Caterpillar Marine Diesel Engines (ModeID398B), each driving a 600 KW brushless KATO Generator (Model 5R4274) designed for Silicon Controlled

Rectifier (SCR) operation. The generators may be operated singularly or in parallel in any combination. The main generators supply power to the propulsion motors via the SCR's. Each of the two counter-rotating propellers is driven by a water-cooled, oil lubricated, 800 HP reversible General

Electric, Model DL58X 170535 main motor. At full power, the propellers rotate at 185 RPM.

Ship's Service electrical power is normally supplied by the Main Propulsion

Generators through 500 KVA, 450V output transformers. The Ship's Service

Switchboards normally supply· power to the Emergency Switchboard. The

53-13/08 1-24-85

1-2

KA TO, 250 K W untermittent), 450V Emergency Generator is driven by a

Caterpillar 3408 engine.

The ship's Central Air Conditioning System consists of three Carrier 40 ton

Chilled Water Plants which serve the Main Control Station, SUR TASS electronic spaces and all messing, lounging, sanitary and berthing spaces.

Normally, two plants are operating with one in standby. The Radio Room, Pilothouse, SUR TASS Array/Winch Shop and the Ship/Winch Control House are cooled by individual air conditioning units.
