About this file
This is a Sludge Analytical Report prepared by Meridian Analytical Labs for the Kansas Turnpike Authority's 2026 Solids Management Plan, documenting laboratory analysis of sludge samples collected from the Towanda Service Area Lagoon on April 29, 2026. The report presents comprehensive analytical results for a single sludge sample (2604509-01) collected from Towanda, with testing performed on various chemical parameters including nitrogen compounds, phosphorus, pH, mercury, trace metals, and total solids content. The analysis was conducted using EPA-approved methods and followed standard quality control protocols, with results reported in dry weight basis measurements for most analytes.
The analytical findings indicate that the sludge contains measurable concentrations of copper (3.66 mg/kg), nickel (2.98 mg/kg), and zinc (18.2 mg/kg), while other trace metals including arsenic, cadmium, lead, molybdenum, and selenium were detected below reporting limits. Nitrogen, ammonia measured 1720 mg/kg dry weight, total Kjeldahl nitrogen measured 3390.8 mg/kg dry weight, and total phosphorus measured 2820 mg/kg dry weight. The pH of the sludge sample was 7.21 S.U., with total solids comprising 19.4 percent of the sample. Mercury was detected below the reporting limit of 0.01865 mg/kg. All analyses were performed with appropriate quality control measures including blank analyses, laboratory control samples, matrix spikes, and duplicate analyses, with the report approved by lab manager Brett Perry. The facility maintains current certifications from both the Kansas Department of Health and Environment and the Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality.
