About this file

This is a Structural Calculations document prepared by Vector Structural Engineering, LLC for the Veterans Cemetery Phase III Columbariums project located at 17111 South Camp Williams Road, Bluffdale, Utah 84065. The project, managed by the Division of Facilities Construction and Management (DFCM) under Project #U3450.0003.261, involves the design of six new columbarium niche walls as part of a veterans cemetery expansion. The structural calculations were completed on June 30, 2026, and reviewed for code compliance by DFCM on July 16, 2026. The design is based on the International Building Code 2024 Edition with Utah Amendments and ASCE 7-22 standards. All structural steel must comply with AISC 16th Edition specifications, with A36 steel as the standard material. Concrete specifications require a minimum compressive strength of 4,000 psi at 28 days with Type II cement. The design parameters reflect site-specific conditions including a basic wind speed of 103 mph (3-second gust) per ASCE 7-22, a seismic design category of D, and soil class C based on geotechnical analysis by Applied Geotechnical Engineering Consultants, Inc.

The design calculations address wind loads, seismic loads, and foundation requirements for columbariums with heights of 8.5 feet and varying widths (4.5 feet for 2-10' units and lengths of 24.1 to 28.1 feet). Design wind pressures are calculated at 11.8 psf (0.6W) with diagonal pressures of 9.6 psf. Seismic analysis using the Equivalent Lateral Force method yields a base shear coefficient (Cs) of 0.530, with the seismic design controlling over wind design. The foundation design includes reinforced concrete footings with #4 rebar at 7-inch spacing and cantilevered retaining wall elements with #4 horizontal reinforcement at 5-inch spacing. The calculations include comprehensive stability checks for overturning and sliding, with soil bearing pressure evaluations based on an allowable bearing capacity of 3,750 psf. All structural members are specified to be galvanized in accordance with ASTM A123 and ASTM F2329 standards, and welding must be performed by certified welders per American Welding Society standards.

Value provided is 3-second gust wind speeds at 33 ft above ground for Exposure C Category, based on linear interpolation between contours. Wind speeds are interpolated in accordance with the 7-22 Standard. Wind speeds correspond to approximately a 7% probability of exceedance in 50 years (annual exceedance probability = 0.00143, MRI = 700 years). Values for 10-year MRI, 25-year MRI, 50-year MRI and 100-year MRI are Service Level wind speeds, all other wind speeds are Ultimate wind speeds.

Site is not in a hurricane-prone region as defined in ASCE/SEI 7-22 Section 26.2.

Vertical component of active lateral soil pressure IS NOT considered in the calculation of Sliding Resistance.

Vertical component of active lateral soil pressure IS considered in the calculation of Overturning Resistance.

Horizontal Deflection at Top of Wall due to settlement of soil

(Deflection due to wall bending not considered)

Soil Spring Reaction Modulus 250.0 pci

Horizontal Defl @ Top of Wall (approximate only) 0.897 in

The above calculation is not valid if the heel soil bearing pressure exceeds that of the toe, because the wall would then tend to rotate into the retained soil.
