About this file
This document is a U.S. Coast Guard Computerized Maintenance System procedure (R-S-1646) for conducting a CO2 Flooding System Pressure Switch Test. The procedure applies to multiple CO2 fire suppression systems across various Coast Guard vessels and locations, including systems for emergency generator rooms, paint lockers, engine rooms, and other protected spaces. The test is designed to be performed semi-annually by two personnel (POs) and involves a detailed, step-by-step process to manually test pressure switches, verify alarm systems, and ensure proper functioning of CO2 flooding and ventilation systems. The procedure includes preliminary steps such as notifying personnel, evacuating non-essential personnel, testing pressure switches, observing alarm activations, and completing final steps to return systems to normal status while recording any maintenance actions or discrepancies.

A PRELIMINARY STEPS
1. Notify and obtain permission from Engineer Officer (EO), Engineer Petty Officer (EPO), Engineer Officer of the Watch (EOW), and/or other cognizant personnel as appropriate prior to commencing this MPC.
2. Make announcement via 1MC that CO2 flooding system alarms will be tested and to stay clear of protected spaces, maintenance areas, and surrounding spaces until further notice.
NOTE: When corrective or preventative maintenance work is being performed on CO2 flooding systems, normal space functions and other maintenance work must not be permitted in the CO2 protected space.
3. Evacuate personnel not performing this MPC from the maintenance area, protected spaces, and surrounding spaces.
B TEST PRESSURE SWITCHES
1. Ensure ventilation is in operation for protected space.
NOTE: Some configurations utilize a pneumatic system in place of an electric alarm system. Pneumatic alarms must not be manually tested while installed as actual line pressure is required for actuation. These switches will be tested during performance of other MPCs.
NOTE: Some configurations may incorporate additional pressure switches and/or alarm indicators. Consult system diagram.
2. Ensure white or power avaliable , as applicable, is lit on all local and remote alarm indicating panels, where installed.
3. Ensure alarm bell cutout is in the normal position, where installed.
4. Operate all PRESSURE switches manually, (Refer to Figure 1).
a. Pull knob in the direction required to engage switch.
DESTRUCTION NOTICE - Destroy by any method that will prevent disclosure of contents or reconstruction of the document.

REV’D 05/31/25
5. Ensure ventilation shuts down after PRESSURE switch is engaged.
NOTE: Some systems incorporate dual bulbs within the same for redundancy. In such systems, ensure that both bulbs are lit.
6. Observe operation of the visual alarm beacon inside the protected space from the entrance, where installed.
a. Verify that local alarm bell outside main entrance to protected space is activated, where installed.
7. Ensure pre-discharge alarm is lit on all local and remote alarm indicating panels, where installed.
8. Ensure pre-discharge signal is sent to machinery control system and proper indication is received, (If required).
9. Ensure discharge alarm is lit on all local and remote alarm indicating panels, where installed.
10. Ensure CO2 discharge signal is sent to machinery control system and proper indication is received, (If required).
11. Turn ALARM CUTOUT switch(es) to the “CUTOUT” position, (If required).
a. Ensure audible alarm(s) silences and all pre-discharge alarm and discharge alarm s remain lit.
b. Turn ALARM CUTOUT switch(es) to normal position.
12. Reset PRESSURE switches manually.
a. Ensure alarms are silent when switches are reset.
b. Ensure pre-discharge alarm and discharge alarm s are extinguished on all local and remote Alarm Indicating Panels when switches are rest.
13. Ensure ventilation in protected space is operable.
14. Ensure white power on or power available , as applicable, is lit on all local and remote alarm indicating panels, where installed.
15. Ensure all alarm bell cutouts are in the normal position, where installed.
16. Repeat Steps 1 B 1. through 1 B 15. for all CO2 flooding systems onboard.
C FINAL STEPS
1. Ensure all CO2 flooding and ventilation systems are returned to normal status.
2. Notify EOW and/or other cognizant personnel as appropriate of maintenance completion.
3. Make announcement via 1MC that CO2 flooding system alarm tests are complete, and all areas are safe for personnel.
4. Notify EO, EPO or Supervisor of any discrepancies, repairs, or future actions.
5. Record any maintenance actions.
DESTRUCTION NOTICE - Destroy by any method that will prevent disclosure of contents or reconstruction of the document.
