About this file
This document is a U.S. Coast Guard Computerized Maintenance System procedure for conducting maintenance and inspection of installed fixed CO2 fire suppression systems (Damage Control document R-S-1570, revised 08/31/20). The detailed 31-page manual provides comprehensive step-by-step instructions for disarming, weighing, testing, and rearming CO2 flooding systems across multiple Coast Guard vessel types including WPB-87, WMEC-210, WLB-225A/B, WLBB-240, WMSL-418, and others.
The procedure requires multiple personnel, including a Damage Control (DC) specialist, Fireman (FN), Machinist (MK), and two rescue personnel, and involves critical safety precautions such as wearing Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA), establishing fire watches, notifying personnel, and following strict protocols to prevent accidental CO2 discharge. Key technical steps include weighing CO2 cylinders, testing time delay mechanisms, inspecting system components, checking pull cables, verifying system functionality, and ensuring proper reinstallation. The document emphasizes multiple safety warnings about potential hazards of CO2 exposure and system operation, with extensive diagrams illustrating system components and test setups.

B DISARM INSTALLED CO2 SYSTEM
1. Disarm ANSUL CO2 system if applicable.
a. Proceed to Step 1 B 2. for KIDDE system.
WARNING
DO NOT ATTEMPT TO MOVE CO2 CYLINDERS TO
DETERMINE WHETHER CYLINDER MOUNTING RACK
AND MOUNTING BOLTS ARE TIGHT. MOVING CYLINDERS
WITH CONTROL HEADS INSTALLED MAY CAUSE CO2
ACTUATION.
b. Ensure CO2 cylinder bracket hardware are tight, (Refer to Figure 2).
NOTE: There is no torque value required, do not over tighten.
(1) Tighten hardware, (If required).
c. Ensure cylinders are secure prior to removing discharge hoses.
WARNING
DO NOT PERMIT CAGE TO MAKE CONTACT WITH
ACTUATION CABLE, CABLE CONDUIT, CYLINDER VALVE,
OR CONTROL HEAD. CONTACT BETWEEN CAGE AND
ACTUATING MECHANISM MAY TENSION ACTUATION
CABLE, CAUSING CO2 ACTUATION.
NOTE: Pilot cylinders are the primary cylinders in a CO2 Fixed Flood-ing System. They are fitted with either a control head or a lever-oper-ated discharge head which is manually actuated by a local or remote pull handle. Pressure from pilot cylinders initiates visual and audio CO2 release alarms, ventilation shutdown, CO2 release time delay, and actuation of discharge heads on any secondary cylinders. All CO2 flooding systems have either one or two pilot cylinders.
NOTE: Lever-operated discharge heads have an exposed mecha-nism to release CO2 from the pilot cylinder(s) of non-KIDDE brand systems (i.e. Ansul, C-O-TWO or Fyr-Fyter). They are similar to KIDDE control heads because the actuating levers and cables are exposed, they are highly susceptible to accidental actuation andmust be fully enclosed by a protective cage.
d. Remove cage protecting CO2 cylinder heads.
e. Remove discharge hose from the CYLINDER valve discharge hose connection, (Refer to Figure 3).
f. Insert the safety pin into lever actuator, (Refer to Figure 4).
g. Remove both lever actuators from CYLINDER valves simultaneously using extreme caution to pre-vent tension in pull cable.
h. Install the valve shipping cap, (Refer to Figure 3).
i. Install the cylinder shipping cap.
j. Proceed to Step 1 C.

2. Disarm KIDDE CO2 system.
a. Verify manufacturer system applicability.
WARNING
DO NOT ATTEMPT TO MOVE CO2 CYLINDERS TO
DETERMINE WHETHER CYLINDER MOUNTING RACK
AND MOUNTING BOLTS ARE TIGHT. MOVING CYLINDERS
WITH CONTROL HEADS INSTALLED MAY CAUSE CO2
ACTUATION.
b. Ensure CO2 cylinder bracket hardware are tight, (Refer to Figure 5).
NOTE: There is no torque value required, do not over tighten.
(1) Tighten hardware, (If required).
c. Ensure cylinders are secure prior to removing cylinder heads.
NOTE: Control heads are the KIDDE brand rectangular heads which contain themanual releasemechanism on the pilot cylinder(s). When actuated, the control head opens the pilot CYLINDER valve and CO2 is released.
NOTE: KIDDE control heads are highly susceptible to accidental ac-tuation and must be fully enclosed by a protective cage because the actuating pull and cable are exposed.
NOTE: Discharge heads are pneumatically operated by pressure from the primary cylinder(s) allowing the release of CO2 from all secondary cylinders. Most 50 lb and 100 lb CO2 systems do not have pneumatic discharge heads.
d. Remove CO2 cylinder discharge heads before removing primary cylinder control heads, (Refer to Figure 5).
(1) Loosen discharge head coupling nuts, (Refer to Figure 6 or Figure 7).
(2) Remove discharge heads from CYLINDER valves.
NOTE: Take care not to over bend, kink, or otherwise damage flexible hoses.
(3) Swing discharge heads away from cylinders.
(4) Ensure discharge head o-rings remain in place.
e. Remove both control heads from cylinders simultaneously using extreme caution to prevent tension in pull cable.
