Chiller & Cooling Tower Replacement

47PF0024R0022

Q&A #1

Apr 9, 2024

1. Specification 232113-12 3.4 calls for painting of interior condenser water piping. It appeared that all of the existing piping in the mechanical room is painted. Will there be any painting requirements for other pipe and equipment in the mechanical room?

Answer: All new insulated piping and equipment shall be painted in accordance with paragraph 3.9 in Section 230700 - HVAC Insulation.

2. Floor protection is called out on MP101 note #9 for the entire route from the loading dock to the mechanical room. Will floor protection be required for the tile floor in the mechanical room?

Answer: Provide floor protection for all areas impacted by construction activities, including the floor tile in the mechanical room.

3. XT1 on drawing MP101 appears to show it on a concrete pad. Notes on the drawing only call for new pads at the pumps. Will a pad be required for the expansion tank?

Answer: Provide concrete pad for expansion tank per "Expansion Tank Detail" on Sheet MP603.

4. MD101 does not call for patching or painting of floor in the area of the demolished pumps. Is painting and patching required in this area?

Answer: Repair/patch concrete floor in area of pump removal with emery-aggregate concrete floor topping or cast-in-place concrete formulated to match existing, adjacent, and exposed concrete. Apply a bonding agent primer to in-place concrete prior to installing patch. Paint finished surface to match existing adjacent surfaces. If patch is located on a housekeeping pad, paint entire pad.

Reference Section 099123 - Interior Painting (added per this amendment).

5. Will there be painting requirements for the new concrete housekeeping pads?

Answer: Yes. Paint new concrete housekeeping pads per attached specification Section 099123 - Interior Painting (added per this amendment).

6. Will temporary fencing be required for the project? Can you please provide specs if required?

Answer: Provide temporary fencing as indicated on Sheet C101 - Site Plan and as specified in Section 015000 - Temporary Facilities and Controls.

7. Spec section 232113.13 lists pre-engineered cased pipe systems. Section

3.2 calls for the piping to be schedule 80 steel pipe. Spec section 230700

3.11 B list underground piping as an item not requiring insulation. Can you please clarify the underground pipe and insulation requirements?

Answer: Underground CWS/CWR piping shall be schedule 80 steel pipe as specified in Paragraph 2.2.C in Section 232113.13. Paragraph 3.11.B in Section 230700 shall be deleted. Direct buried piping shall be insulated per Section 232113.13.

In addition, the first vertical section of direct buried piping for condenser water supply/return adjacent to cooling towers shall be provided with four (4) ¾” conduits placed directly adjacent to the carrier pipe before being insulated for installation of heat trace. Conduits/heat trace shall extend a minimum of 30” below grade. Direct buried piping shall extend a minimum of 12” above final grade. Provide end seal at ends of direct buried piping in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations.

8. Drawing MP603 shows a pump detail with the base mounted pump attached directly to a 6” concrete pad. Existing pumps being removed and existing pumps to remain are installed on inertia bases. Can you please confirm that the pump detail shown is correct.

Answer: Detail is correct. New pumps do not need to be installed on inertia base.

9. Spec section 232113 list piping applications for chilled water 4” & over and condenser water 2½” & over. Can you please provide piping applications for pipe sizes smaller than those listed?

Answer:

Piping for chilled water and condenser water piping shall be as follows:

A. Chilled-Water Piping, aboveground, NPS 2 and Smaller, shall be the following:

1. Schedule 40, Grade B steel pipe; Class 125, cast-iron fittings; and threaded joints.

B. Chilled-water piping, aboveground, 2-1/2” and larger, shall be the following:

1. Schedule 40 steel pipe, wrought-steel fittings and wrought-cast or forged-steel flanges and flange fittings, and welded and flanged joints.

C. Condenser-Water Piping, aboveground, NPS 2 and Smaller, shall be the Following:

1. Schedule 80, Grade B steel pipe; Class 125, cast-iron fittings; and threaded joints.

D. Condenser-water piping, aboveground, 2-1/2” and larger, shall be the following:

1. Schedule 80 steel pipe, wrought-steel fittings and wrought-cast or forged-steel flanges and flange fittings, and welded and flanged joints.
