About this file

This is a Question and Answer (Q&A) amendment to RFP 462624 for a Cycloconverter, issued by Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) on May 1, 2026.

The document addresses eleven vendor inquiries regarding technical specifications, facility infrastructure, and installation requirements for the cycloconverter system. Key technical details provided include rotor time constants for three phases (Phase U-N: R=6.10mOhm, L=0.771mH; Phase V-N: R=6.16mOhm, L=0.775mH; Phase W-N: R=6.30mOhm, L=0.774mH), and confirmation that routine motor testing consists only of Hipot, Meggar, and Low resistance measurement (PI) protocols. BNL clarified that vendors may request specific measurements on the drive motor, which BNL employees would perform under vendor supervision, but BNL does not have external matching transformers. Regarding facility infrastructure, BNL has both 480VAC and 208VAC 60Hz power available. The facility includes three potential installation locations: two basement areas (18X7 and 11X7 feet) and one control room upstairs (11X18 feet), with approximately 250 feet of cable length required from the transformer yard to power modules located in the basement. The transformer will be installed outdoors in the transformer yard adjacent to the existing cycloconverter transformer or on a nearby pad. The document references attached pictures and test reports related to shaft encoder details, motor specifications, facility dimensions, transformer yard location, and electrical parameters.

AMENDMENT 2

QUESTION & ANSWER

RFP 462624, Cycloconverter May 1, 2026

Question 1: Please provide the % THD of the rotor current.

Answer 1: BNL does not have this information.

Question 2: Please provide the Rotor time constant.

Answer 2: Rotor time constant:

Phase U-N R=6.10mOhm L=0.771mH

Phase V-N R=6.16mOhm L=0.775mH

Phase W-N R=6.30mOhm L=0.774mH

Question 3: Please provide the routine test protocol that would provide insight into useful parameters like magnetizing current, short-circuit voltage, etc.

Answer 3: The only routine test that is performed on the Motor is Hipot, Meggar, Low resistance measurement (PI).

Question 4: Please provide pictures and other details about the shaft ends where a new speed transducer is required (spec_CAD-1369 paragraph 3.2.3.8).

Answer 4: See attached to Amendment 2, the following two (2) pictures:

1. Generator and shaft encoder

2. Motor End

Question 5: Will we have the opportunity to perform measurements on the drive motor?

What would be the procedure to be followed? Who will be allowed to perform the tests?

Does BNL have equipment like matching transformers, accurate voltage, and current sensors, etc.?

Answer 5: BNL does not have an external matching Transformer. The vendor must specify which tests are requested. BNL Employees would be performing the test under the supervision of the vendor.

Question 6: What is the supply voltage for our control cabinets and UPS system – 60 Hz, 480V / 277V?

Answer 6: BNL has both 480VAC and 208VAC 60Hz available. See attached to Amendment 2, the following one (1) picture:

1. Available Voltage

RFP 462624, Amendment 2 Questions and Answers

Question 7: Is there a building floor plan?

Answer 7: BNL is currently working on a layout and the exact placement of the new CCV.

The dimensions for basement are 18X7 and 11X7 (see pictures) and upstairs in our control room 11x18. All measurements are in feet. See attached to Amendment 2, the following two (2) pictures:

1. Basement (7x18)

2. Basement (11Xx7)

Question 8: What is the required transformer installation site (indoor/outdoor)?

Answer 8: Transformer will be located outside in our transformer Yard. It will be placed next to the existing cycloconverter transformer, or a pad nearby. See attached to Amendment 2, the following two (2) pictures:

1. Transformer Pad

2. Transformer Yard

Question 9: What are the cable lengths between components (refers to building plan and the planned installation place for our cabinets)?

Answer 9: BNL has three (3) locations: two (2) in the basement (11X7 and 18X7) and one (1) in our control room upstairs (11X18). Assuming power modules in the basement and controls upstairs, then a total of 250 foot from the transformer yard to power modules. All three locations can be used.

Question 10: Is it possible to get traces of the startup process for the current setup during live operation in high-resolution? (to zoom in to the single sinewave) Answer 10: Currently LOTO has been applied to the MG set and would take BNL extra time to remove it. BNL has the motor brush rigging off so that the inductance can be measured.

BNL is also in the process of performing visual inspections of the MG set with covers off.

Question 11: Please define the following:

1. Rotor: Current, Voltage

2. Stator: Current, Voltage

3. Phase angle

4. Reactive/active power

Answer 11: See attached to Amendment 2, the following two (2) pictures:

1. Test Report

2. Test Report 1
