About this file

This document is a preliminary draft of a footfall analysis report for the Great Hall Concessions at Denver International Airport (DEN), prepared by InterVISTAS and dated July 1, 2025, projecting passenger and infrastructure usage for the years 2030 and 2035. The analysis focuses on passenger flows, accumulation patterns, and movement through different modules and levels of the airport's Great Hall, specifically examining Level 5 (L5) and Level 6 (L6) with detailed insights into passenger and meeter/greeter distributions, checkpoint capacities, and circulation areas.

The study utilizes a comprehensive modeling approach that includes passenger demand assumptions, passenger behavior modeling, and detailed flow and accumulation analysis. Key findings indicate significant variations in passenger movements throughout the day, with peak 15-minute flows ranging from 59 to 1,715 passengers across different areas. The analysis considers factors such as checkpoint lane capacities (totaling 9,840 passengers per hour), passenger check-in type distributions, and landside modal splits. The modeling assumes 60% standard and 40% PreCheck security screening and provides granular insights into passenger movements, including potential checkpoint balancing and passenger routing behaviors.

Employees/Staff + Used average hourly portal badge scans from the last 90 days as a proxy for flight crews and other employees who access the concourses

+ Average of 155 scans per hour, peak hour is 6 AM with 410 scans

+ Scans per hour distributed evenly across hour for modeling purposes

Passenger Splits (Landside Modal) + Passenger splits, as noted in the table, indicate which terminal level the passenger uses to enter the Great Hall

+ Passengers are distributed across the different doors/vertical circulation cores on each level

+ All curbside check-in passengers routed to L6

+ Adjustments made to reflect TNC pick-up and drop-off on L5

Check-In + Transaction rates and counter locations/counts as previously simulated

+ Airline locations may require adjustments to balance performance

First Bag Delivery Times Allocation Rules

Bag Claim + Inventory as provided by DEN planning staff, 18 domestic claim units and 3 international claim units

+ Allocation rules and first bag delivery times as provided by DEN planning staff

Checkpoint Capacities

Meeters/Greeters & Well-wishers + Previously modeled at 0.35 per pax based on 2019 data

+ Well-wishers remain with passengers until just outside the security checkpoint queue

+ Meeters/greeters can arrive 10 to 60 minutes prior to scheduled flight arrival time with arrivals distributed evenly across the 50-minute window

+ Meeters/greeters instructed to wait in Mod 3 in case of early arrival before passenger before moving into Mod 2 at the top of the escalators from the AGTS platform

+ Meeter/greeter accompanies passenger to baggage claim, if applicable, before exiting the Great Hall with them

Meeter/Greeter Model Behavior

Arrived >10 min before passenger arrival time?

Wait in L5 Mod 3 until closer to arrival time

Wait for passenger in L5 Mod 2 central area

Passenger Arrival and Link-up

Bag Pick-up/Exit

Move to Mod 2 5 min before passenger arrival

Modeling Behavior

Passenger Behavior + CAST model passengers are very savvy travelers, they know where they want to go and where they need to be before they enter the terminal (e.g., a CAST departing passenger already knows the location of the airline ticket counter, the security checkpoint, and the departure gate as well as how to get to each of these processes)

+ Passengers have pre-set objectives; they do not get distracted or change their minds about what they want to do

+ Passengers take the shortest possible route to their next facility/task

+ Passengers are not programmed with any abnormal behaviors that may create irregular ops situations

What this means for modeling results… + The footfall results from CAST may underreport since passengers, meeters/greeters, and well-wishers do not wander, take circuitous routes, or get lost

+ Minimal passenger flow across the bridge on L6 is primarily due to checkpoint balancing since the model generally assumes that passengers arrive to the correct side of the terminal
