About this file
This is a technical specification document for transformer pad and vault installation requirements issued by Ameren, the utility provider for the EV Charging Station Installation project at the Microtel Inn by Wyndham in Champaign, Illinois. The specification outlines requirements for a 750kVA utility transformer installation that will support the 625kVA power cabinet serving four Tesla V4 Superchargers. The project encompasses civil work including transformer site preparation, concrete pad installation, conduit routing for primary and secondary electrical connections, grounding rod installation, and protective barrier installation. The transformer site must be truck-accessible with a compacted rock and dirt base measuring 4 inches thick, extending 12 inches beyond the pad perimeter, and installed to within plus or minus 2 inches of final grade. All settling and shifting must be eliminated through proper compaction procedures.
The specification details precise technical requirements for underground and above-ground raceway installation, including conduit material specifications (Schedule 40 or 80 PVC), minimum burial depths (36-48 inches for primary conduit, 24-36 inches for secondary), bend radius requirements (36 inches for primary sweeps, 30 inches for secondary sweeps), and maximum bending limits of 270 degrees per run. All raceways must include 2500-pound minimum-rated pull tape. Clearance requirements around the transformer pad are specified as 56 inches or 4 feet 8 inches for back access, 45 inches or 3 feet 9 inches for each side, and 120 inches or 10 feet for front access. The vault and pad, weighing 1200 pounds, are provided by Ameren and available for pickup at the local operating center, with installation performed by the customer. A 5/8-inch by 8-foot ground rod will be installed by Ameren, and protective barriers must consist of 6-inch concrete-filled tube installed at minimum 36-inch depth with at least 60 inches of above-grade extension.
