About this file

This is a Statement of Work (SOW) for the design and fabrication of magnet packages for the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory's AD-Proton Source Department, issued by the Fermi Forward Discovery Group (FFDG). The document, prepared on July 24, 2026, and dated August 3, 2026, requires the subcontractor to design, manufacture, and deliver two complete solenoid and corrector magnet packages that will steer, focus, and match a 30 keV H- beam from the ion source into the Radio Frequency Quadrupole (RFQ) accelerator.

The subcontractor must deliver two solenoids with integrated dipole correctors (horizontal and vertical steering magnets), along with comprehensive documentation including complete drawing sets, production schedules, material certifications, final design reports, quality control plans, fabrication and inspection reports, and magnetic measurement test plans and reports. Key technical specifications require the solenoid to achieve 0.3 T² m integrated field strength at peak current (≤300 A) with maximum power dissipation of 6.5 kW, maintain field homogeneity of ±1% in the good field region, accommodate an 80 mm minimum inner diameter beam pipe, and not exceed 400 mm outer diameter. The dipole correctors must deliver 0.5 mT m field integral at maximum current (≤15 A) with ±5% field uniformity. The contract includes three formal design reviews (Initial Kickoff, Preliminary Design Review at 50% maturity, and Final Design Review at 90-100% maturity), with FFDG approval required before production. Factory Acceptance Tests and Site Acceptance Tests will verify compliance with electrical, magnetic, thermal, and hydrostatic specifications. The overall project schedule spans approximately 40 weeks from receipt of order, with deliveries expected in one batch followed by site acceptance testing and contract closeout. The subcontractor must provide facility access for FFDG observation, submit monthly status reports, hold bi-weekly meetings, notify FFDG of FAT dates with 20-day advance notice, and obtain FFDG approval for any post-award changes via a Manufacturers Exception Document.

1. INTRODUCTION

The Proton Source Department of Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (FNAL) is responsible for providing high-intensity proton beams for FNAL’s broad physic program. To facilitate the complex’s continued success the Proton Source Department is seeking proposals for the design and fabrication of 2 magnet packages that will steer, focus, and match the 30 keV H- beam from the ion source into the Radio Frequency Quadrupole (RFQ) accelerator. The magnet packages must include the solenoid coil and two dipole corrector magnets for steering the beam in both the vertical and horizontal planes.

This Statement Of Work (SOW) outlines the technical tasks and requirements for the Prospective Offerors (hereafter referred to as “the Subcontractor”), including reporting, documentation, scheduling, change management, deliverables, and communication with The Buyer, Fermi Forward Discovery Group (FFDG).

These requirements must be fulfilled in accordance with FNAL standards and guidelines.

2. SCOPE AND DELIVERABLES

The primary scope of work covers design, manufacturing, fabrication, quality control (QC), and delivery for a built-to-spec package inclusive of all associated and/or described work within this SOW. The Subcontractor will provide all shop facilities, manufacturing/fabrication equipment, qualified shop personnel, engineering personnel, inspection services, magnetic testing services, cleaning services, and packaging services for completing the scope of work defined in this SOW.

Table 1 provides a list of all contract deliverables, including documentation which is listed as required (AR).

# Magnetic measurements may not be required (see further for details)

The Subcontractor is encouraged to use the reference design provided by FFDG; however, it is the Subcontractor’s responsibility to perform the detailed final design for FFDG’s approval prior to start of fabrication. This includes magnet design, core design, coils/sections design, power and water connections design, and support design.

Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory 4

If the Subcontractor does not use FFDG’s suggested design but instead chooses to make significant modifications or prefers to make its own design per the provided specification, the full set of magnetic, thermal and hydraulic calculations must be performed and provided to FFDG prior to the start of fabrication for approval. The Factory Acceptance Tests (FATs) described in Table 6 shall then be supplemented with thermal and extended magnetic measurements.

3. REQUIREMENTS/SPECIFICATIONS

The design of the magnet package must contain an isolated solenoid coil, an isolated horizontal dipole corrector coil, and an isolated vertical dipole corrector coil. The magnet package will be cross-sectionally circular in design with a support cradle. The support will have at least 2 mounting holes that accommodate a ½-13 hex head bolt to ensure the magnet can be mounted to the stand. A drawing of the stand will be provided to the subcontractor for reference.

The solenoid magnet shall consist of 6 double-pancake coils connected in series electrically and in parallel for water cooling. The coils assembly shall be bound by removable solid steel plates at both longitudinal ends and electrically isolated from the coils. End plates and spacer rings (between sections) shall be made of 1006/1008 low carbon steel or equivalent. The solenoid aperture shall allow for the installation of a 3” OD beam tube to pass through the center (minimum inner diameter of 80 mm). The solenoid outer diameter shall not exceed 400 mm (without water manifold, tubing and electrical connectors).

The steering dipole package includes both vertical and horizontal dipoles. Each dipole shall be assembled from 2 shell-type coils wound from #12 square heavy ML coated copper magnet wire (or equivalent). The design must ensure that the magnet will maintain all magnetic properties, including magnetic axis positions, within the stated specifications upon disassembly and subsequent re-assembly. Table 2 and the remaining information in this section outline the overall design requirements which must be considered when designing the solenoid and steering elements. The specific design requirements are found in Table 2, Table 3, and Table 4. The requirements in these tables supersede the overall design requirements should contradictory statements be found during the preliminary design stage.

Each magnet shall have provisions to allow for rigging the magnet using swivel hoist rings meeting ASME B30.26 requirements. The swivel hoist rings shall be properly sized/rated for the load. Each swivel hoist ring must be marked to display the name or trademark of manufacturer, related load, and torque value. The Subcontractor shall provide the swivel hoist rings. The placement of the eyebolts must be reviewed and approved by FFDG.

The solenoid’s current leads shall match the standard 2-bolt long barrel cable lug on each lead, 13/4” on center and of the same of greater surface area as the lug. Leads should be marked as “positive” (or “+”) and “negative” (or “-“), consistent with the direction of the solenoidal field as indicated on the side of the yoke.

Each of the 4 dipole coil leads shall be connected externally using standard terminal blocks installed on the solenoid core. All power and water connections shall be located at the top of the solenoid (except for the terminal blocks just mentioned).
