About this file

This solicitation notice requests proposals for site preparation work for a new MRI #2 facility at the Muskogee Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Muskogee, Oklahoma. The project magnitude is between $500,000 and $1,000,000. The work includes renovations to prepare the site for the new MRI #2. The solicitation is set aside 100% for service-disabled veteran-owned small businesses. Apparent successful offerors must be verified and visible in the Department of Veterans Affairs Vendor Information Pages database. The point of contact for questions is Christina Beeler-Blackburn of the Department of Veterans Affairs.

MRI Field Strength

4/29/2021

Question: Based on the floor plan the 5 gauss (pacemaker) field is extending beyond the right side wall of the MRI suite to Lobby#105 space to side of the MRI. I need to know if field lines on Life Safety drawing indicated is an accurate assessment.

Answer: The field distances depicted on the Life Safety drawing has been reviewed by GE and the installation approved given the RF barrier within that wall. The A/E overlayed the field strength of the 3T MRI into that drawing as an illustration. The GE information sent with the last RFI included the GE field strength diagrams. The overhead Gauss field view taken from the GE diagrams shows the Gauss strength utilized for A/E design which is shown below:

The MRI was relocated according to those field strengths in coordination with GE engineers.

A key point is that the field on that drawing is that it does not represent the true magnetic field strength at that point upon installation. The wall is RF shielded so that field is attenuated and was used by GE to relocate the MRI. The approval took a good amount of time and exchange of drawings between the A/E and GE.

The Life Safety drawing is in the package does not describe the accurately. It does not state it but is use by the physicist that will measure actual field strength for installation approval—as well as other information purposes. The inclusion of the GE installation guide, titled “MRI-M145015-00-A” should clarify that. The Life Safety can be criticized—but should not be used as a basis for assessing this project.
