About this file

This is a federal construction contract specification document for replacing the medical gas system at Fort Wayne VA Medical Center. The contract encompasses comprehensive labor and materials for installing new air compressors, vacuum pumps, medical gas piping, valves, gages, alarm systems, and all associated equipment and accessories to replace existing systems.

Key deliverables include duplex medical air and vacuum pump systems with desiccant dryers, final line filters and regulators, dew point and carbon monoxide monitors, ASME-coded air receivers, pressure and vacuum gages, alarm panels with local and master alarm functions for oxygen, compressed air, and vacuum services, zone valves in cabinets, piping identification, low-voltage control wiring, conduit systems, and all necessary penetration sealing and firestopping. The contractor must comply with NFPA 99 standards and provide comprehensive testing and certification by an independent medical gas testing agency, including piping purge tests, purity tests, cross-connection tests, and contamination analysis. Installation must follow a phased approach with a 2-day hospital-wide medical air shutdown and a 2-week shutdown for final connections and testing. The contractor is required to provide four copies of maintenance and operating manuals, factory-trained instructors for equipment operation and maintenance training (minimum two 4-hour sessions), and OSHA compliance including a certified competent person on-site, 10-hour safety training for all personnel, and fire safety plans. All work must maintain existing utility services, minimize disruption to hospital operations, comply with VA security protocols, and coordinate with the Infection Control Risk Assessment team regarding dust control measures.
