THE FOLLOWING ANSWERS TO REQUESTS FOR INFORMATION QUESTIONS ARE HEREBY PROVIDED TO CLARIFY, UPDATE, REVISE OR CORRECT CONTRACT SPECIFICATION AND/OR DRAWINGS.

QUESTION AND ANSWER 1

Specification and Section: Page 330, 14 24 10 – 20/39 2.20(A) Q1: Elevator P3 is increasing in rated capacity, which will increase the size of guide rail needed. In the above referenced section, it is stated "no additional structural points of rail attachment will be provided”. Will the VA provide engineered drawings that support this statement?

A1: The VA will not be providing engineered drawings. The successful Contractor shall provide a drawing showing the new bracket spacing. If additional rail attachments are required, the Contractor shall have the bracket spacing reviewed by a structural engineer and the information forwarded to the VA. The cost of the structural engineer and any additional rail attachments shall be included in the Contractor’s bid.

QUESTION AND ANSWER 2

Specification and Section: Page 312, 14 24 10 – 2/39 Q2: Will the VA please provide engineered drawings to support increasing the rated load of building 2, elevator P3 to 5500lbs.? This increase in rated load will require changes in the building structure at the pit level, increase in hydraulic jack hole size, casing and jack size, and hoist way structural changes.

A2: The VA will not be providing engineered drawings. Successful contractor shall only be responsible for providing the elevator design and reaction numbers. A/E will take design information and reaction numbers and do a structural analysis of the existing shafts and provide a bulletin if required for any additional structural support for the new elevator. For installation of secondary containment casing for the jack: Remove a 3’-0” square hole in the pit floor to facilitate installation of protective secondary containment casing. Fill hole with concrete after jack installation and seal pit with non-permeable epoxy.

QUESTION AND ANSWER 3

Specification and Section: Page 272, 14 21 10 – 2/40. Elevator Schedule for Building 82, Elevator 1.

Q3: Sheave diameter and width will be increased, and machine weight will also be increased to accommodate the requested increase in capacity. Load bearing structure (existing) for rails and rail brackets and supports should also be increased to accommodate increase in load capacity and seismic requirements. Would the VA Please provide dimension data on existing machine beams embedded in concrete and structural capabilities, which supports the specification to provide a clear inside platform dimension of 5’4” x 7’3” yet still accomplish the increase in capacity from 3500lbs. to 5500lbs.?

A3: The VA will not be providing engineered drawings. No existing As-builts are available, the contractor is to verify in field of existing conditions. Successful contractor shall only be responsible for providing the elevator design and reaction numbers. A/E will take design information and reaction numbers and do a structural analysis of the existing shafts and provide a bulletin if required for any additional structural support for the new elevator.

QUESTION AND ANSWER 4

Specification and Section: Page 290, 14 21 10 – 20/40 2.23(A) Q4: Would the VA Please provide engineered drawings showing the existing buildings pit, hoist way, and machine room can support the increased reactions that will be present when the elevator safety device sets? Due to the increased rated load from 3500lbs. to 5500lbs. for Building 82, Elevator #1, the reactions will be vastly different from the reactions the building was currently engineered to withstand.

A4: No existing As-Builts are available, contractor is to verify in field of existing conditions. The VA will not be providing engineered drawings. Successful contractor shall only be responsible for providing the elevator design and reaction numbers. A/E will take design information and reaction numbers and do a structural analysis of the existing shafts and provide a bulletin if required for any additional structural support for the new elevator.

QUESTION AND ANSWER 5

Specification and Section: Page 300, 14 21 10 – 30/40 2.45(A)

Q5: Existing hoist way dimensions will not accommodate the increased platform size required to increase the rated load from 3500lbs. to 5500lbs. on Building 82 Elevator #1. Would the VA Please provide engineering data on existing hoist way construction and load bearing capabilities of the existing hoist way and the engineering plan to increase the dimensions of the hoist way and Pit to accommodate the increased load capabilities on the car platform?

A5: No existing As-Builts are available, contractor is to verify in field of existing conditions. Platform size is to remain the same size as the existing car while increasing the weight limit of the elevator.

Successful contractor shall only be responsible for providing the elevator design and reaction numbers.

A/E will take design information and reaction numbers and do a structural analysis of the existing shafts and provide a bulletin if required for any additional structural support for the new elevator.

QUESTION AND ANSWER 6

Specification and Section: Page 292, 14 21 10 – 22/40 2.34(C) Q6: Are card readers required on each elevator, or only Building 82 elevator #1?

A6: All elevators are to receive card readers.

QUESTION AND ANSWER 7

Specification and Section: Page 288, 14 21 10 – 18/40 2.15(A) Q7: Would the VA please Provide engineered data of the existing building structure to show the existing machine beams supports are adequate for the increase in rated load for elevator from 3500lbs. to 5500lbs. for Building 82, Elevator #1? Sheave diameter and width will be increased, and machine weight will also be increased to accommodate the requested increase in capacity. Load bearing structure (existing) for rails and rail brackets and supports should also be increased to accommodate increase in load capacity and seismic requirements.

A7: No existing As-Builts are available, contractor is to verify in field of existing conditions. The VA will not be providing engineered drawings. Successful contractor shall only be responsible for providing the elevator design and reaction numbers. A/E will take design information and reaction numbers and do a structural analysis of the existing shafts and provide a bulletin if required for any additional structural support for the new elevator.

QUESTION AND ANSWER 8

Specification and Section: Page 290, 14 21 10 – 20/40 2.27(A)

Q8: Would the VA please provide engineered drawings of the existing hoist way supports and load bearing capabilities for increased rail and bracket sizes and quantities to accommodate requested increased capacity for elevator from 3500lbs. to 5500lbs. for Building 82, Elevator #1?

A8: No existing As-Builts are available, contractor is to verify in field of existing conditions. The VA will not be providing engineered drawings. Successful contractor shall only be responsible for providing the elevator design and reaction numbers. A/E will take design information and reaction numbers and do a structural analysis of the existing shafts and provide a bulletin if required for any additional structural support for the new elevator.

QUESTION AND ANSWER 9

Specification and Section: Page 290, 14 21 10 – 20/40 2.26 Q9: Would the VA please provide engineered drawings of the existing building hoist way structure, and pit structure, to show they can support the new increased weight on the counterweights (+ 40%) and that the dimensions of the hoist way will accommodate them, as there will be an increase in the length of counterweight frame, necessary overhead space, etc. to accomplish the increase of rated load from 3500lbs. to 5500lbs. for Building 82, Elevator #1?

A9: No existing As-Builts are available, contractor is to verify in field of existing conditions. The VA will not be providing engineered drawings. Successful contractor shall only be responsible for providing the elevator design and reaction numbers. A/E will take design information and reaction numbers and do a structural analysis of the existing shafts and provide a bulletin if required for any additional structural support for the new elevator.

QUESTION AND ANSWER 10

Q10: Will the VA allow the contractor to install roof access hatches in the roof of each traction elevator machine room, to accommodate removal and installation of new traction machines and equipment via crane?

A10: The following building will not require a roof access hatch: Building 2, 39 and 82. Attachment - Section 07 71 00 with all noted product submission will be required for approval, prior to installation. Contractor's desired location of hatch will need approval, prior to installation. Installation of roof hatch shall not void warranty of the existing roof.
