TECH DATA
SpecTrim® products are designed for use in commercial, institutional, retail, hospitality, and residential interiors.
MATERIALS
Product Description:
A. SpecTrim® Molding and Wainscot are pre-finished wood moldings that have a decorative protective film surface, up to16 mil thick. The decorative PVC surface film is factory applied with adhesive, heat, and pressure to a shaped MDF (medium density fiberboard) core.
B. SpecTrim® shall provide wax putty fill sticks to match each specified finish for installation touch-up and fill.
Product Types:
Moldings: Specify model number, finish code, and length of each profile. All items will be manufactured 10’ long, except casing which is 8’ long, u.n.o.
Smoke and Flame:
All standard SpecTrim® products are produced with a flame spread index (FSI) of 100 (Class III) and a smoke developed index (SDI) of 330, according to the ASTM-E84 (NFPA 255, ANSI/UL723, and UBC 8-1) smoke and flame development test.
PVC film is a self-extinguishing Class A material, 16 mil thick, when applied to a non-combustible surface.
MDF may be treated to obtain a Class A fire rating, when required by code and where quantities will allow. Consult your SpecTrim representative for minimum quantity requirements.
DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING
A. SpecTrim® is delivered on pallets, corner guarded and cardboard protected, shrink-wrapped, and affixed to a pallet to avoid separa-tion during shipping.
B. Product shall be stored in a dry, temperature controlled, indoor area that maintains a temperature between 65 - 80 degrees Fahrenheit and a relative humidity between 25-55%.
Products are to be placed in the installation area no less than 48 hours prior to installation to adjust to environmental conditions.
INSTALLATION
A. Inspect SpecTrim® Molding products prior to installing each length. Do not install defective or damaged lengths. Install SpecTrim molding products in accordance with manufacturer’s installation instructions available from www.spectrimbp.com.
B. Cut SpecTrim® Moldings using a power radial saw with a sharpened carbide tipped, 64 tooth triple-chip blade. Cut miter, scarf, butt joints, etc. according with the standards of the Architectural Woodwork Institute (AWI) and as field conditions require.
C. Install SpecTrim® using a suitable panel adhesive and an 18 gauge power nail gun to hold molding in place. When conditions do not permit nailing, pre-drill and counter-bore trim screws to attach to wall framing.
D. Finished ends usually self return miter to the wall. If a self return is cut square, exposing the raw MDF. The exposed end may also be laminated with the PVC film in the field.
The finished PVC is furnished upon request.
The Mitered finished ends that are in high traffic areas may eventually wear and get damaged at the point of the miter. If this is a concern, SpecTrim® offers a 2” x 3/4” Ven4ma® molded finished end trim covered in the matching finish to protect the finished end of the base and chair rail molding.
E. Mitered outside corners that are in high traffic areas may eventually wear and get damaged at the point of the miter. If this is a concern, SpecTrim® offers a 2”x 2” Ven4ma® molded corner trim covered in the matching finish to protect the outside corner of the base and chair rail molding.
F. Caulking—use non-marking masking tape along both sides of a colored caulk joint to create a clean narrow bead.
G. Fill all exposed nail holes with matching color wax putty, provided with each order.
Wipe off excess wax putty with a clean rag and Naptha solvent.
H. Do not sand or apply any other finish to SpecTrim® Molding and Wainscot.
CLEANING
A. SpecTrim® molding is extremely resistant to staining and is easy to clean. To remove stains start with a mild cleaning agent such as warm soapy water or dishwashing detergent.
Alternatively, standard household cleaners such as Windex, Pine-sol, or rubbing alcohol will remove most stains without affecting the texture or appearance of the surface.
B. It is not recommended using highly concen-trated solvent based chemicals such as gasoline, acetone, M.E.K., ethyl acetate or toluene.
However, if applied with a cloth in very small quantities and quickly wiped away, these solvents have proven safe and effective in removing the most difficult stains such as permanent ink.
It is strongly recommended that a test area be cleaned prior to using such strong solvents in highly visible areas. (Do not use abrasive cleaners.)
C. Clean dirt from surface of installed products using mild soap and water.
WARRANTY
A. When properly installed by a skilled carpenter, SpecTrim® products are warranted three years from the date of installation against de-lamination. Finishes are warranted against color fade for a period of 5 years.
B. Warranty claims must be accompanied by proof of purchase, as well as details regarding the nature of the problem, location of the molding, etc.
C. This warranty does not include any conditions or damages resulting from accidents, alterations, misuse, abuse, motorized devices, or failure to follow our instructions with respect to measure-ment, installation, cleaning or maintenance.
This warranty also does not cover any condition or damage resulting from removal and/or reinstallation of the moldings. This warranty also does not apply to conditions caused by normal wear and tear upon the product.
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
SpecTrim® is a pre-finished molding that has a decorative and protective PVC film surface. The finish is 12 to 16 mil thick and factory applied with adhesive, heat, and pressure to a medium density fiberboard core that has been shaped into the molding profile.
The PVC veneer equals and often surpasses the beauty of real wood and offers color consistency that cannot be achieved with wood finishes.
SpecTrim® also costs far less than real wood finished moldings. There are no knots, sap-streaks, or splits like those found in lumber, so the yield is much greater, for additional cost savings.
Some of our wood finishes cannot be produced in solid wood or would be very cost prohibitive as real wood moldings. With SpecTrim®, you get the look you want, plus durable, easy-to-install, maintenance-free moldings that won’t split, shrink, mildew, or discolor.
SpecTrim® is also environmentally friendly. It is made with MDF, (reconstituted saw dust), that would have otherwise been used as land fill, and PVC that is 100% recyclable.
And best of all, no timber is harvested and no forests are destroyed.
25 PROFILES 15 FINISHES
Traditional
APPLICATIONS
SpecTrim® standard molding designs have been selected to offer versatility in size and shape, to be used in various design applications depending on the scale of the area to be trimmed. As conventional wall molding, SpecTrim® comes as a Crown, Chair Rail, Base, Casing, and Panel Molding. It can also be used to trim store fixtures, partitions, cabinetry, etc., and coordinate with various other laminate and wood finishes. Our PVC veneers are also thermal-foils that can be thermally formed onto shaped MDF panels to create matching panel and door components.
Perfect for Hospitality, Health Care, and Food Service where durability and easy cleaning are important.
SpecTrim® is also perfect for all Commercial, Multi-Family, and Residential areas as well.
ORDERING
SpecTrim® Moldings may be ordered in any combination of our fifteen standard PVC veneers, including exotic woods such as Anigre and Bird’s Eye Maple. Then select from our 25 standard profiles, offered in both traditional and contemporary styling.
Stock sizes are mostly 10’ lengths except for casing, which is usually stocked 8’. Some items are stocked 8’, 10’ and 12’ and also may be produced in these sizes. Consult you SpecTrim® Representative for availability and quantity requirements.
CUSTOMIZING
Shapes
Custom profiles can easily be created for similar cost savings over real wood, provided a minimum order of 3,000 linear feet is produced. Smaller quanti-ties may be acceptable for a set-up fee and we welcome your inquiries.
Finishes
There are hundreds of PVC finishes available in our library. If you need a non-standard finish, where quantities permit, simply send us a sample or give us a laminate number, etc. to attempt a match or a close compliment to the finish you are looking for.
THE ENVIRONMENT
• SpecTrim® PVC veneer saves on the use of wood and so it saves our forests, which reduces global warming.
• Polymers use lower energy in production and transportation than consumed by wood products.
• SpecTrim® recycles all waste from the unused material of our PVC veneers.
INSTALLING
SpecTrim® Moldings are installed much the same as other ornamental wood molding. For best results, SpecTrim® should be placed in the installation area 48 hours prior to installing to adjust to the climate of the room. Cut molding as required using a powered miter box saw with a sharp carbide 64-tooth triple chip blade. Attach with panel adhesive and an 18-gauge nail gun, or pre-drill and counter bore for narrow head trim screws. Touch-up with our matching wax putty fill sticks, provided free with every order.
Protect molding ends and corners with Ven4ma molded end and corner caps.
CLEANING
SpecTrim® Moldings can withstand cleaning with most liquid solvents.
Denatured alcohol or mild soap and warm water works best for most stains. Never use abrasive or powdered cleaners. Small stains may be spot cleaned using small amounts of concentrated solvent chemicals, such as acetone, M.E.K., gasoline, ethyl acetate, gasoline, or toluene.

Wainscot Paneling Wainscot Paneling is our modular system that enhances the look of any room.
SpecTrim Wainscot is a pre-finished system of trims and panels that provide the rich and warm look of real wood with all the advantages of superior millwork. Our popular wainscoting features a durable film veneer finish that protects the beauty of our classic designs.
Smooth and free from defects, our wainscoting installs easily and won’t split or mildew. And what’s more, it won’t shrink like wood, so joints stay tight throughout the seasonal temperature changes. You can chose from 6 finishes and three panel styles. Although custom heights can be ordered, most SpecTrim®
Wainscot is made for a standard height of 36”. SpecTrim® Wainscot panels install with tongue and groove components that hide most of the fastening.
Wainscot System moldings are stocked in 6 standard finishes. We offer our other standard finishes when projects exceed 1,000 linear feet for each molded part.
Consult your Spectrim Representative to discuss your needs when you would like to use our other standard or non-standard finishes for our wainscot system.
Coordinate our Wainscot with the 25 prefinished molding profiles available from our
SpecTrim Moldings product line.
Warranty
When properly installed SpecTrim Wainscot products are warranted no less than 5 years from the date of installation against self de-lamination. Surface finishes are warranted against color fade for a period of 5 years.
Panel Types City Flat Panel
Our PVC veneers are laminated to an MDF flat panel, which provides a smooth and attractive recessed appearance. The 1/4” Flat Panels are shipped in 48” widths and precut to the perfect height (usually 23
5/8" if you need a 36" overall finished wainscot height). Cut the width in the field to suit your stile spacing and slide the 1/4” panels into the grooves provided in the stiles and rails.
