460-321 New Parking Garage
RFIs responses through 2/19/2019
Q1: After reviewing the earthwork specification and Urban Engineers geotextile report, there appears to be conflicting information regarding the earthwork procedures. Urban Engineering recommends all fill and backfill material within the parking garage be select granular off-site borrow material and removing the existing fill in the parking garage footprint & replacing with the same select granular off-site borrow material. The specifications only mention utilizing satisfactory soil material. Please provide direction how to proceed with pricing and if we should be following the recommendations of Urban Engineering.
A1: Follow the recommendation of the geotechnical report.
Q2: Is Sch. 40 PVC piping acceptable for the underground storm water piping in lieu of the service weight cast iron hub piping listed in the specs?
A2: Sch. 40 PVC is acceptable outside the garage limits.
Q3: Reference the soil boring report developed by Urban Engineers for the parking garage site.
In Part V. Analysis and Recommendations, Sub-Part A. Foundations, Section – Ground Floor Slab it states, “The ground floor slab may be placed on grade after removal of the existing fill and replacing with engineered fill, as described in the following sections”. In Part V. Analysis and
Recommendations, Sub-Part C. Site Work it states “The proposed construction area must be cleared of pavement and light pole foundations, and the existing fill should be removed from the proposed parking garage area. Filling to achieve grades in the proposed parking garage, and backfilling around foundations, must be performed with engineered fill.” The borings of B-1 and
B-5 both indicated a layer of “fill” just underneath the paving. Please clarify the following:
a. Is the “existing fill” noted to be removed and replaced in the recommendations the same fill indicated in B-1 and B-5?
b. Please define the extent of the fill to be removed and replaced for estimating purposes.
c. Will a schedule of unit prices for removal and replacement of unsuitable soils be issued for use in the overage / underage concerning this work?
A3: Follow the recommendation of the geotechnical report.
