Bid Phase RFI Response Issued 5/16/2025

Number Date Received Discipline Question Response

113 5/7/2025 Demolition

I’d like to request that copies of the as-built architectural and structural as-builts would be shared with the bidding contractors. It’s difficult to know what conditions we want to see further detail on without actually seeing a copy of the as-builts to start with.

We will provide select sheets from the original 1909 documents for reference only. Please note that the in a building of this age, not every alteration over it's 120 year lifespan has been documented. Contractor is responsible for field verification of conditions. See:

Historic Drawings for Distribution 1 - Select Original Dwgs.pdf Historic Drawings for Distribution 2 - 1978 Stage Reflector & Alcoves.pdf

114 5/7/2025 Demolition

If as-builts are not going to be shared then we would like to know the following information;

- Demolition drawings reference existing brick piers and concrete piers;

o Can we get details of the construction of these brick piers?

hollow block construction?

masonry spread footings to remain?

o Can we get details of the construction of the existing concrete piers?

AD-110-DP or do they vary in some way?

existing masonry spread footings to remain?

o Which piers are brick and which piers are concrete? See question 113.

115 5/7/2025 Demolition

Which slabs from RFI #16 are assumed to be 6” base plus 4” topping slabs? The demolition drawings show slab ranging from the following thicknesses;

oAuditorium Slab: 4” to 8”
oMud Slab: 6” to 8”
oElevated Floor at project/control booth: 6”
oStage Slab / Platform: 4” with 4” topping slab
oBackstage Area: 6” slab with 4” topping slab (I’m

assuming this is the answer to RFI #16, but we’re assuming this isn’t accurate for all slab requiring demolition?

Auditorium and mud slab are assumed 6"+4" based on historic drawings. Following documents for all other assumed slab thicknesses.

116 5/7/2025 Demolition

What structural elements are supporting existing scissor projector lift?

o Sizing + layout of existing steel if it’s a steel girder construction. If not, then we need to know what exactly this support system is constructed from.

The existing projector lift suspended above the existing wheelchair lift is supported from steel beams on the underside of the mezzanine slab above.

117 5/7/2025 Demolition

What is the construction of the existing partition walls to be removed? How are these walls connected to adjacent elements to remain

Interior partitions to be demolished in the back of house areas (greenroom, dressing rooms, East Ambulatory, etc.)

are assumed wood or metal framed with drywall. Exact methods of attachment to the surrounding masonry has not been confirmed.

118 5/7/2025 Demolition

AD-302-SC makes it seem like there are walls underneath the existing Auditorium seating? Is this the case and if so, what is the construction / thickness of these walls?

There are no walls under the existing Auditorium floor; there are masonry and brick support beams between this floor slab and the foundation/ mat slab below.

119 5/7/2025 Demolition

Ideally, we’d also be able to provide as-builts of the existing acoustic reflector to our engineering partners to determine what kind of support would be appropriate to avoid temporary increase on individual hanger point loads. Again, failing that we would like to get an idea of what each of these connections are rated to hold, what these hanger points are constructed from and how exactly they’re attached to existing Guastavino Dome. See question 113.

120 5/7/2025

1. A-302-SC notes that the back of the arched "alcoves" should be replaced and/or "restore" (restored). Please confirm the extent of replacement versus restoration.

Should extant, friable historic fabric be conserved/consolidated?

These smaller alcoves located east and west of the stage are original, but were modified at a later date to install concealed speakers. The original plaster surface at the back of these alcoves was removed to accommodate the speakers. There is no friable historic fabric known. The back wall of these alcoves needs to be reframed and rebuilt to the historic appearance.

121 5/7/2025

2. 1/A-411-DT notes that the terra cotta ceiling elements are to be cleaned and restored. Please confirm that this note refers to the ornamental and glazed terra cotta elements. Please confirm the type and extent of repairs required and provide a specification.

Yes, this note refers to the historic terra cotta elements.

Please refer to the AC-series drawings and spec 04 0180.93.

122 5/7/2025

3. Note 17 on SF-421-MP identifies two existing openings in the Mezzanine slab. Please confirm that these openings may be used for hoisting materials into and out of the crawl space.

The openings may be used for access to crawl space.

Contractor is responsible for evaluating existing structure for loading from any proposed hoist points.

123 5/7/2025

4. Per drawing FX-001, Fire Suppression General Note #18, do you foresee this note being required, since all sprinkler piping is shown?

Contractor is responsible for coordinating with final installed conditions and providing sprinklers as required by General Note 18 where applicable.

124 5/7/2025

5. Per drawing FX-121-FP, Sheet Keynotes FX112, can you please expand on this note? Are you stating that all seating will require sprinkler coverage? If so, from above or down below at each seat?

Sprinkler protection in the auditorium seating area is to be provided at the auditorium dome, as indicated in the contract documents. FX112 documents SI OSHEM’s determination that the auditorium seating area be treated as a Light Hazard occupancy, as indicated in the contract documents.

125 5/7/2025

6. Per drawing MH-400-HP, General Sheet Notes E, please show where cable operated remote dampers are located.

Cable operated, remote dampers are required for all manual balancing dampers that will not be readily accessible through ceiling tiles or open ceilings. Instances include, but are not limtied to, stage floor grilles, Restroom grllles, Greenroom 95 diffuser, and Dressing room.

Contractor to verify if additional instances are required based on coordination with ceiling and mechanical plans.

126 5/7/2025

7. Per drawing M-442-HP, detail 1, where does the relocated protection nitrogen tank come from? Also, does this scope fall under fire protection or HVAC? Is there piping that is required for this scope, if so, please provide a sketch showing this work.

An existing dry valve system including a nitrogen generator (tank) and air compressor are existing on the mezzanine. To accomplish new (mechanical) work, it is anticipated that portions of this system will need to be relocated to allow for the new ductwork to be installed. This work should fall under the fire protection contractor. System needs to remain online during demo and reconstruction of mezzanine. Contractor to verify existing system and coordinate need for relocation with proposed new mechanical work.

127 5/7/2025

8. Confirm Door 65C at chair lift is to be restored and not replaced. It is listed on the door schedule and no mention is made that it is an existing to remain door. See question 100.

128 5/7/2025

9. Please provide extend of "restorage" to be done to Door 65C per A501-DT. No restoration notes are provided on door schedule. See question 100.

129 5/7/2025

10. Door 999 Per 8/A-510-DT notes to preserve and maintain transom above double door. Is there any trim or jamb at the door which needs to be salvaged or preserved? See revised A-510DT provided with Bid Addendum 1.

130 5/7/2025

11. On A510-DT Door 65C is shown as a double door with transom on top. During the walk thru this door is an arched door without a transom. Confirm door is arched and to be salvaged and restored with new hardware. See question 100.

131 5/7/2025

12. Door 65C, are we do restore trim and jamb at this door as well? The door frame is noted on Door Schedule A-510 DT as Hollow Metal, on walk thru the door frame appeared tgo be wood. Is the door frame to be replaced with metal?

This door is an existing historic door to remain. The door and frame are wood. Please see additional notes on sheet A-510- DT provided in Bid Addendum 1.

132 5/7/2025

13. Reference Decorative Bronze Railings. Spec 057300-4 2.3.A lists several manufacturers. I’ve looked at their websites and no one has the exact shape that is shown on drawing A-442-DT. There are available elliptical profiles that are close to the detail shown on the drawing. Can we use these instead of a custom casted ellipse? See question 33.

133 5/7/2025

14. We have contacted Julius Blum. Their 4539 or 4572 would be a close match but not entirely elliptical. They suggested their 6488 but it’s a hollow shape. They did mention they’ve done work for the Smithsonian in the past. See question 33.

134 5/7/2025

15. Note FX104 on FX-121-FP states "MAINTAIN A

MINIMUM CLEARANCE OF 18 INCHES BETWEEN

AUDITORIUM DOME PENETRATIONS AND THE

STRUCTURAL WALLS ABOVE." Please clarify which structural walls this note is referring to. Please clarify the reason for the 18" clearance and whether the 18" clearance starts at the bottom of the penetration (at the auditorium ceiling) or at the top of the penetration (at the crawl space floor).

This note refers to the rib walls located above the Guastavino dome. The 18” horizontal clearance is necessary to ensure that the penetrations do not affect the structural integrity of the dome and rib walls. The clearance should be measured from the closest point of the penetration to the face of the rib wall.

135 5/7/2025

16. Is there scope to remove the lead-based paint on the Guastavino tile? If so, please provide a quantity for bidding purposes. Is the ACM on the Guastavino tile behind the stage area to be removed?

See question 28. Additional clarification: the intent is to clean the surface of the Guastavino tile and not remove the glaze. The residual ACM fireproofing located behind the stage area is to be fully removed by a licensed asbestos abatement contractor to include clearance inspection and testing. Quantity estimates are provided on haz mat drawings.

136 5/7/2025

17. 10/SF-503-DT notes that the finish tile is to be installed as part of "future work, N.I.C." Please confirm that the finish tile is not in the contract. See question 99.

137 5/7/2025

18. 6/SF-503-DT shows a typical support of sprinkler pipe above the Guastavino dome. Please confirm which walls are hollow clay tile vs. brick. Also, if the hollow clay tile wall is fully grouted, is it acceptable to make the penetrations per detail 4/SF-503-DT instead?

Hollow clay is not fully grouted. Penetrations per 4/SF503DT are not allowed in dome interstitial space. See SF503DT for details of clay walls. See keynote 29 on SF422MP for allowable conditions for 4/SF503DT detail.

138 5/7/2025

19. Is a base Revit model available, even if it is just the existing structure? See question 20.

139 5/7/2025

20. Are there historic drawings available? If so, please provide. See question 113.

140 5/7/2025

21. For the penetrations shown in detail 8/SF-503-DT, should accommodation be made for the loss of any stability due to lateral forces at the bottom of the wall?

Where possible coordinate openings to align with edge of terra cotta blocks. Place openings to avoid leaving less than 4” of a block where terra cotta blocks must be cut. New openings to be similar to existing.

141 5/7/2025

22. Per drawing M-441, detail 1 indicated (2) 60mm CHWSR branches taping into existing 80mm mains. Can this system be shut down and drained or will they require hot taps?

These mains can be isolated and drained to accomplish the new taps.CHWSR mains shown on M-441 serve only (e) AHU-1, which only serves the area of work impacted by this project. Contractor to field verify all existing conditions and coordinate with SI facilities for isolation of these mains prior to any work.

142 5/7/2025

23. Based on the Auditorium Remote Area Detail on FX- 001, a hydraulic calculation was performed. Please provide the pipe sizes used in this calculation.

Contractor is responsible for providing hydraulic calculations and determining pipe sizes, as required by Specification 21 13 13, Paragraphs 1.4.B and 1.5.H.

143 5/7/2025

24. See Detail 6 on SF-503-DT. Please provide the size of the various Unistrut Channels.

Unistrut may be selected by contractor. Recommend P2000 SL for adjustability.

144 5/7/2025

25. Reference Painted Wood Trim on A-409-EL. - Please confirm Wood Trims PT-1 (3/A-409-EL) and PT-2 (1/A-409- EL) are the same and painted PT-1 to match the arch at the top at East and West Alcoves, and same but may be painted differently PT-2 for the North/Behing control Desk?

The 4" wood trim around the acoustical panels within the alcoves and and painted wood paneling below the panels are to be painted PT-2. The reference to PT-1 in detail 3/ A- 409-EL will be revised.

145 5/7/2025

26. Please confirm if the millwork for Closet [95E] shown on A-430-EP would be typical Wood Closet Shelf & Rod? Yes, please provide typical closet shelf with wood rod.

146 5/7/2025

27. Please provide a photograph of the existing plaster base in Auditorium noted on A-403-FP for custom vented wood base to match, also shown at detail 1/A-408-DT.

Spec 064023 does not define this item.

A photograph and detail have been included on sheet A-408-

DT.

147 5/7/2025

28. WDB-1 as listed on AF-601-SH and on 1/AF-602-FP but is not defined. Could this be the “custom vented wood base …, painted [06 1023] shown on 1/A-408-DT?

The vented wood base at the stage should be 11" total height, 2-1/2" thickness, with an ogee base cab to match the style of the Keen plaster base throughout the Auditorium. The drawings will be clarified to require a similar profile in a smaller wood base to be used in select back of house areas.

148 5/7/2025

29. Please confirm the height of the crawlspace mentioned on drawing PP-420-FP.

There is no crawl space below this area of the building. The existing utility trench below the floor is 24" x 24" max and contains electrical wiring as documented in historic drawings and seen under the floor hatch in the existing restroom. The drawing will be clarified to explain the assumed routing of this trench; Contractor should assume new trenching is required to connect new sanitary lines to the existing seen above the electrical lines in this trench.

The details on sheet A-407-DT were based upon the H&H Specialties 500 Series Curved Heavy Duty Track paired with the Model 462 Track Mounted Curtain Machine.

The valance will be a custom painted curved/ bent wood secured via screws to the strut framing behind.

151 5/7/2025 Masonry Restoration

Per drawing note #39 on SF-421-MP refers to detail 8/SF- 510-DT for access opening in existing hollow clay tile. It appears this detail is actually 8/SF-503-DT. Please verify this is the correct detail reference.

Confirmed, the correct reference to keynote #39 is 8/SF-503-

DT.

152 5/7/2025 Access Please confirm the height of the crawl space mentioned on drawing PP-420-FP. See question 148.

153 5/7/2025 Mechanical ControlsPlease confirm the preferred controls contractor. See question 57.

154 5/7/2025 Working Hours

Based on the drawing working zones indicated, please confirm that all mechanical, plumbing, and fire protection scope can occur during standard working hours and not off-hours.

Any work that involves hot work, impairment, system shutdown that affects building outside work area, or will produce noise or vibration in excess of limits documented in the division 1 specifications, must be done off hours.

These parameters will necessitate some M/P/FP scope to be completed off hours.

155 5/7/2025 Mechanical

Detail 1 on M-441-HP Indicates 2 60mm CHWSR branches taping into existing 80mm mains. Can these system be shut down and drained or will they require hot taps? See 141.

156 5/7/2025 Theatrical Lighting

(Item #1) Reference 116191-13: Please specify the color choice for #1 and #2 Ellipsoidal (custom color per architect). This will greatly impact cost and production time.

The lights should be custom colored to match PT-1 which is the primary paint color being used on the walls of the Auditorium.

157 5/7/2025 Theatrical Lighting (Item #2) Reference 116191-13: Please specify the color choice for #6 8" Fresnel (custom color per architect). Confirmed. See question 156.

160 5/7/2025 Corner Guards

Bid documents include a specification 102600 for Wall and Door Protection, however no corner guards are shown in the drawings. Please confirm if corner guards are required. If so, please provide quantity or locations.

The existing corner guards will remain and be repainted. The drawings will be updated with this information. Please disregard this spec section.

161 5/7/2025 Masonry Restoration

Expanding on RFI #39, specification 040110 calls for the use of pressurized water for cleaning. Due to the difficulty of collecting/disposing such water and protecting adjacent surfaces, the masons have proposed hand cleaning using sponges and brushes. Please confirm that this method would be an acceptable method of cleaning.

Interior masonry cleaning equipment is outlined in specification section 040110, 2.7. It includes a wet/dry extractor vacuum recapture system with a low psi pressure pump and recovery tanks (see paragraphs I and J). The intention is for the contractor to use this type of system for the interior cleaning, as it allows for containment of rinse water.

162 5/7/2025 Access Please confirm that a scaffold dance floor will be allowed to bear on the new auditorium floor structure

The new auditorium floor structure has not been designed for point loads, aside from maintenance lift noted on S-002.

Refer to loading diagrams on S-002 for design loads. The contractor is responsible for evaluating the deck for any proposed point loads from temporary scaffolding. Heavy point loads should be assumed to be reshored below deck down to mat slab or coordinated to align with post locations.

163 5/7/2025 Access

Will either the crawl space under the auditorium structure or the mezzanine above the Guastavino ceiling be considered a confined space?

These are considered non-permit confined space. Per SI OSHEM Safety Manual, Chapter 15: "A Non-Permit Confined Space is a confined space that does not contain, nor has the potential to contain, any hazard capable of causing death or serious physical harm. "

164 5/7/2025 Electrical

In past experience a public safety DAS for life safety communication, BDA, emergency responder radio network systems are required to be implemented or modified for renovations of similar magnitude. As nothing is found in the bid documents to this aspect, please verify these systems are not required. See question 21.

165 5/7/2025 AL-001

Please confirm if signage should be included as there are no signage drawings, details, schedule or specification section.

Signage included. See updated drawing(s) and specification.

166 5/7/2025 051200

Reference SF-411-MP - Please confirm Note 31 only where shown at intermediate aisle steps in two locations.

Does this occur at the other steps?

Confirmed; this occurs at the two locations noted (one each side aisle at intersection with center cross-aisle).

169 5/7/2025 A-442-DT

Elevation 1/A-442-DT indicates the Type 4 bronze rails (4 total) are to be removable. The floor plan note on A- 401—FP only indicates of the 4 are removable. Please clarify.

See drawing A-401-FP. Only 2 railings need to be removable: at the upper west steps.

170 5/7/2025 A-442-DT; A-401-FP

Elevation 2/A-442-DT indicates the Type 4 bronze rails (6 total) are to be fixed but then shows a separate note calling them “removable bronze handrail, Type 4”. This does not match up to the floor plan notes on A-401--FP.

Please clarify. See question 169.

171 5/7/2025 A-442-DT

Please verify if the Lower Center Aisle rails are to be fixed or removable and if all 4 Upper Center Aisle ones are removable? See question 169.
