About this file

This document is a Request for Information (RFI) log for the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute (SCBI) Renew Veterinary Hospital project located in Front Royal, VA. The project involves a comprehensive renovation of a veterinary hospital with a total performance period of 732 calendar days, with construction award anticipated by September 30, 2025. The solicitation number is 33330225RF0010019, with proposals due on May 28, 2025, at 3:00 PM EST.

The RFI log contains 94 detailed questions from multiple contractors covering various aspects of the project, including specifications for equipment installation, crane systems, telecommunications cabling, demolition requirements, utility services, and construction phasing. Key technical details include installing new gantry crane systems in pathology and animal treatment areas, replacing HVAC systems, renovating exterior spaces, and working within an operational veterinary facility. The project requires careful coordination with Smithsonian staff, as construction must accommodate ongoing medical procedures and emergency operations. Davis-Bacon wage rates will apply, and the project involves interior and exterior renovation work across multiple phases.

3a3Spec 41-2213 / Drawing A-113WMSchlosserSpec Section 41 2213 GANTRY CRANES says the Section Includes “Ceiling-mounted bridge cranes and ceiling-mounted monorail cranes” but under Part 2 Products lists it as a GANTRY CRANE (which comes with a free-standing portable floor-frame). The Model CMP (2000 LB Capacity) by Spanco that you list is a “Ceiling-Mounted Workstation Bridge Cranes” that uses two runway beams. Please confirm that the Ceiling-Mounted Bridge Crane is what we should provide at Room C108 Pathology Lab as shown on dwg A113 Ceiling Plan? Assuming the Crane for Room C108 Pathology Lab should be a Ceiling-Mounted Bridge Crane as described above, we need to know the following information:

(a) should the Bridge crane run the 18’ length of the W12x19 beams and function as a bridge crane?

(b) Are all 3 functions required: Travel, Trolley, and Hoisting?

(c) What functions need to be manual and what functions should be electric?

HOIST AND ATTACHMENT BY PROVIDER. MAXIMUM POINT LOAD ON EXISTING BEAM = 2000LB”. Assuming that a second hoist system is required for Room D107, we need to know the following information:

(1) Should the crane run on only one of the two beams shown, like a monorail crane?

(2) What if anything goes on the second beam?

(3) Shall this crane have variable speed for hoist and trolley?

(4) Should trolley be manual or electric?
