About this file
This is an addendum to the specifications for decorative concrete paving work on the South Beach Placemaking Project in Newport, Oregon. The addendum details requirements for colored concrete paving installation, including the application of color hardeners, curing compounds, and sealing compounds. The work encompasses four color types: Denim Blue or Pool Blue (Type B), Dark Red or Quarry Red (Type R), Burgundy Mauve or Federal Yellow (Type P), and Pistachio Green or Slate Green (Type G). Acceptable manufacturers are limited to Sika Corporation and Brickform, with specific product lines identified for color hardeners and sealants. The specifications require a pre-job conference one week prior to concrete placement, with attendance from the design professional, general contractor, construction manager, subcontractor, ready-mix concrete representative, and manufacturer's representative. A colored concrete mockup measuring 5 feet by 5 feet must be constructed at a location selected by the design professional, using the same workers and processes intended for permanent work, and must remain through project completion as a quality standard.
Material specifications require a minimum cement content of six sacks per cubic yard with a slump of 4 inches or less, and prohibit the use of calcium chloride to prevent mottling and surface discoloration. Curing must be performed immediately after initial surface hardening using liquid membrane curing and sealing compound at manufacturer-recommended coverage rates. A seal coat application is deferred until 28 days after concrete placement, assuming a cure coat has been applied. Installer qualifications require a minimum of 5 years' experience with similar work, while manufacturer qualifications must demonstrate 10 years' experience in product manufacture. The general contractor bears responsibility for temporary floor protection throughout construction to safeguard concrete surface quality, with heavy-duty seaming tape explicitly prohibited as it causes permanent damage. All concrete work not covered by other materials must be protected throughout the project and treated as finished flooring.
