About this file
This document is an engineering specification for the Lambertson magnets required for the Accumulator to Storage (ATS) Transfer Line and the Storage to Accumulator (STA) Transfer Line of the Advanced Light Source Upgrade Project (ALS-U) at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.
The specification defines the essential geometric and physics requirements, vacuum chamber specifications, magnetic field requirements, and other technical details for the Lambertson magnets. It also includes detailed requirements for the magnet assembly, yoke and pole design, alignment features, hardware, lifting/handling, and documentation. The magnets must meet tight tolerances and specifications to achieve the required magnetic field quality. The vendor is responsible for developing the detailed design, fabrication, and assembly procedures to meet these requirements. This specification is part of the LBNL RFP HW-10152024 solicitation for the Lambertson magnets for the ATS and STA transfer lines.

4 INTRODUCTION
The ALS-U Accelerator System Group is responsible for providing the accelerator magnets to build the Accumulator to Storage Transfer Line (ATS) and the Storage to Accumulator Transfer Line (STA). These two and mirror-symmetric transfer lines will meet in the straight section of the Storage Ring (SR), at the fast swap-out kicker, where the fresh bunches will replace the spent ones. The injection and the extraction points in the Accumulator Ring (AR) will be located in straight section ±30° away from the swap-out kicker.
Figure 4.1 Overview of the ALS-U transfer line region with the DC Lambertson septum magnets for ATS and STA transfer lines marked with green rectangles.
The injection and extraction of swapped-out beams in the AR straights will be performed using three magnets placed symmetrically for each transfer line:
Fast kicker deflecting the beam vertically by 4 mrad from/into the AR stable orbit;
Thin eddy-current septum magnet deflecting the beam vertically by 55.6 mrad;
DC Lambertson septum magnet deflecting the beam horizontally by 176.2 mrad.

5 DOCUMENT DEFINITIONS
5.1 Specification Definition
Shall, will, may, and should are used to define every specification listed in this document.
The definitions of these terms are as follows
May – is used to indicate a desire or goal of a specification. This can also be interpreted ‘as nice to have’ and are not contractually binding.
Shall –is a specification that is contractually binding and must be implemented.
Should – is used to indicate a desire or goal of a specification. This can also be interpreted ‘as nice to have’ and are not contractually binding.
Will – is used to inform intent or declaration of purpose. This is not a specification.
Example, the author will use the word ‘shall’ to indicate that a specification is contractually binding and must be implemented.
5.2 Identification Number
Each specification stated in this document shall have a unique identification (ID) number (NUM). Once an ID NUM has been assigned to a specific specification, the ID NUM cannot be changed or reassigned.
The ID NUM formant is as follows SYY-XX-QQQQQQ, where S indicates that this is a specification, YY identifies the Major Systems Level within the ALS-U project, XX is a unique identifier within the Major Systems Level, and QQQQQQ is a unique six digit number.
The unique ID numbers are assigned by the ALS-U Lead System Engineer.
5.3 Traceability
Each specification stated in this document shall have a traceability to determine the relationship between different requirements and specifications not only within this document, but also for the entire project.
6 LAMBERTSON MAGNET SPECIFICATION
6.1 Essential Geometric Physics Specifications
The essential physics specifications were developed to define the magnetics requirements for the ring. These specifications integrate physics design requirements, lattice structure, O ffi cia lly

003348
The AR stored beam chamber shall be made of a non-magnetic Stainless Steel. An additional layer of ferromagnetic shielding material (e.g. μ-Metal wrap or low carbon steel tube) should be used if it is necessary to meet the magnetic field requirement.
EM numerical analysis
003350 Two 5 mm ferromagnetic plates separated by 5 mm gap shall be installed on flux-return boss-feature on both side of the magnet in order to shield the AR stored beam from the fringe field of the magnet.
EM numerical analysis
003352 Shielding plates shall be installed with a 12 mm gap to the extended yoke roof-plate for installation of the racetrack vacuum chamber.
EM numerical analysis
003354 External faces of the shielding plate assemblies shall be co-planar with external faces of the extended yoke roof-plate.

9 ALS-U TRANSFER LINE DIPOLE REQUIREMENTS ADOPTED TO
LAMBERTSON MAGNET
The following section was adopted from the ALS-U internal document AL-1462-7396 (BTA-MAGNETS Dipole Common Mechanical Requirements by S. Soezeri, M.
Mardenfeld, and C. Swenson) in order to unify the set of design principles across transfer line dipole magnets.
9.1 General Requirements
Number Type Description Value Reference General
Shall Specifications: Unless otherwise specified, information in drawings and specifications are to be interpreted as "SHALL" requirements. Information in "REFERENCE DESIGN" CAD models are to be interpreted as "SHOULD" or "MAY". Information in "INTERFACE CONTEXT" CAD models are to be interpreted as "WILL".
N/A
General
Shall Specifications: The drawings package includes some components defined by "space claim" volumes. For these components, the vendor has significant freedom in completing the design. While LBNL is providing a solid model "Reference Design" for these components as a guide, the vendor has the freedom to alter those designs provided they remain entirely within the specified volumes, meet the requirements listed in specifications and in the drawing notes, and meet the non-reference dimensions controlled by the drawing.
N/A
General
Shall Specifications: The drawings package includes some components defined with specific dimensions. These dimensions are shown at the assembly or interface level.
For these components, the vendor shall adhere to the dimensions and design intent of the interface drawings, while filling in the detailed piece-part level design, and ensuring that the magnet meets requirements, standard practices, and is fit for service.

Shall Specifications: Where the vendor uses all or part of the LBNL provided design, it is still the vendors responsibility to ensure that those components meet all requirements, standard practice, and are fit for service. This holds for components defined by both "space claim" volumes AND components defined by specific dimensions. The reference design provided by LBNL is not approved for fabrication, and has not been through the full rigor of a final design review.
