About this file

This is a routine bridge inspection report prepared by the Georgia Department of Transportation for Bridge #219-5027-0 (Barnett Shoals Road over Oconee River) located in Oconee County, District 1, approximately 5 miles east of Watkinsville. The inspection was conducted on August 28, 2025, by Team Lead Billy Lanthrip, with an underwater inspection previously completed on May 6, 2025, and a specialized inspection on May 13, 2024. The bridge is a 240-foot prestressed concrete structure built in 1980, consisting of four 60-foot spans with six prestressed concrete I-beams per span. The structure carries Barnett Shoals Road, a rural major collector highway with approximately 2,660 annual average daily traffic and serves as a non-navigable waterway crossing. The bridge is owned and maintained by the Oconee County Highway Agency and currently operates with an open posting status with no restrictions.

The inspection findings indicate overall good structural condition with component condition ratings ranging from 6 to 8, though several maintenance activities have been identified as Priority B items requiring attention. Defects identified include widespread shrinkage and transverse cracking in the concrete deck (up to 0.060 inches wide in some areas), minor spalling in beams and caps with limited exposed rebar, and scour around pier footings at Bents 3 and 4. Maintenance recommendations include repair of scour around footings at multiple bents, removal of debris accumulation at Bent 3 Column 1, deck repairs, and rear approach slab repairs. The bridge maintains operating and inventory load ratings of 52 and 31 respectively under HS loading, with no weight restrictions currently posted. Historical inspection data from 2005 to 2025 shows the structure has remained relatively stable with consistent condition ratings, indicating the bridge continues to perform adequately despite the identified minor deficiencies requiring routine maintenance.
