About this file

This is a routine bridge inspection report prepared by the Georgia Department of Transportation for the Simonton Bridge Road over Middle Oconee River, located in Oconee County (Bridge #219-0017-0), conducted on August 27, 2025, by Team Leader Billy Lanthrip. The bridge, built in 1958 and last reconstructed in 2000, spans 240 feet across the Middle Oconee River with a maximum span length of 60 feet. The structure consists of five spans with a combination of reinforced concrete T-beams (Spans 1, 2, and 5) and steel beams (Spans 3 and 4), supported by multiple bents with steel H-piles and concrete caps. The bridge carries Simonton Bridge Road, classified as an urban minor arterial with an average daily traffic count of 6,720 vehicles (2024 data), and is owned and maintained by the 2-County Highway Agency. The structure remains open to traffic with no weight restrictions and carries 2 lanes in both directions with a roadway width of 28.1 feet curb-to-curb.

The inspection report identifies the bridge's overall condition ratings as satisfactory to good across major components: deck condition rated 6 (satisfactory), superstructure rated 7 (good), and substructure rated 7 (good). However, the report documents multiple maintenance priorities requiring attention, including deck repairs for spalling in edge beams with exposed rebar in span 4, repairs to Bent 3 cap with exposed rebar, bearing cleaning and painting, scour repair at Bent 4 column 1 footing (exposed 6 to 12 inches), and vegetation trimming at structure ends. Specific defects noted include transverse and shrinkage cracking throughout the deck, exposed rebar in span 3, diagonal cracks in T-beams, unseated anchor bolts on bearings, bearing corrosion, and delamination/spalling in the Bent 3 cap. An underwater inspection conducted on May 6, 2025, identified moderate scale/abrasion on concrete columns and slight scour exposing one footing. The bridge was last rehabilitated under project STP-M002-00(486), with steel beams cleaned and repainted in 2004 using waterborne paint systems.
