RADON EXPLANATORY NOTES

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has established a radon action level of 4.0 picoCuries per liter (pCi/L). Occupied buildings with radon concentrations less than 4.0 pCi/L do not require radon mitigation; un-occupied buildings, or those buildings which are occupied only infrequently for brief periods of time, also do not require radon mitigation. Occupied buildings with radon concentrations greater than

4.0 pCi/L require radon mitigation and verification of radon reductions as soon as possible, with priority given to dormitories and student recreation buildings. Occupied buildings with radon concentrations greater than 20.0 pCi/L should be considered significant radon exposure hazards, and priority for mitigation should be given to buildings with these highly elevated radon concentrations.

Radon mitigation techniques include: (1) adjustment of the building HVAC system to create a positive pressure within the building; (2) sealing of foundation wall cracks, penetrations, or other openings;

(3) sealing crawlspace openings and sump pits; (4) installing an active subslab depressurization (ASD) system.

Puget Sound Energy (PSE)

Service is brought to the center from the main switchgear located in the lessor's powerhouse. The 4.16/2.4 kV lines are routed through a loop of transformer vaults which are either above ground or underground in the tunnel.

From these vaults the secondary 120/208V, 3-phase, 4 wire system is distributed to DOL leased buildings via their respective service disconnects and/or main distribution panels. Some buildings have their own meter while others are zone metered. Dining Hall Building 13 and Dormitory Buildings 12, 15, 16 and 17 have backup power from an emergency generator in the powerhouse for critical loads such as condensate pumps and cooking equipment. The emergency backup power is metered separately.

Six T-1 lines are brought to the main telephone/server room located in Building 32. Local telephone service is provided by Frontier Communication with a T-1 line connected to the router. Long distance calls are provided via Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) on the Job Corps Data Center network. The data and VoIP communication networks are routed via underground fiber optic cabling. A central fire alarm control/annunciator panel in Security Building 34 monitors fire alarm panels in Dining Hall Building 13, Warehouse/Receiving Building 27E, Medical Assistant/Medical Office Specialist Building 27W, and Dormitory Buildings 12, 15, 16, and 17. Other fire alarm panels at the center are monitored by lessor's central fire alarm control/annunciator panel in the powerhouse.
