Introduction Topock Marsh is located within the Havasu National Wildlife refuge and has been identified as a key source population area for species covered under the Lower Colorado River Multi-Species Conservation Program (LCR MSCP). The LCR MSCP Habitat Conservation plan recognizes the potential impact of flow-related activities on species habitats at Topock marsh under Avoidance and Minimization Measure AMM2. It identifies improvements to intake structures, as well as the installation and operation of pumps at the Topock Marsh diversion inlet at the Fire Break Canal to provide necessary water flow to Topock Marsh during critical times when flow could not otherwise be provided.
In April of 2021, Reclamation’s Technical Service Center (TSC) developed a Field Exploration Request (FER) for the Yuma Area Office (YAO) to provide geologic and geotechnical design data for the Topock Marsh Pumping Station Project. This request was subsequent to engineering and hydrological analysis conducted by YAO in FY18, which determined that the use of gravity diversion alone would not be sufficient to meet the annual elevation requirements for the marsh in time for bird breeding season (March 15). Multiple alternatives were considered, and after discussions with the US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) in FY19, five pump station designs were developed with a total pumping capacity of 60 cfs, which was determined to be adequate to meet the operational needs of the marsh birds prior to the March 15th deadline. Using the preferred alternative, MSCP and YAO planned to complete a 30 percent Final Design in preparation for a Value Engineering Study and requested the assistance of TSC’s expertise.
This report summarizes and presents the results of geotechnical testing conducted in support of the Topock Marsh Pumping Station Project. Geotechnical testing at the site and subsequent laboratory testing were gathered from standard penetration test (SPT) boreholes with test pit excavations. Three boreholes and two test pits were sampled for this investigation by USBR Yuma Area Office (YAO) personnel. Field work was performed May 4th – May 7th, 2021.
All field and laboratory tests were performed in accordance with applicable ASTM standards;
test standard numbers as noted herein.
Location The project site is located within the Havasu National Wildlife Refuge along the Arizona side of the Colorado River (Figure 1). It can be accessed off the Arizona Highway 95 adjacent to Needles, California by traveling south on the River Highway approximately 4 miles. The test pits and boreholes were dispersed along the north and south bank of the inlet to the Fire Break Canal (Figure 2). Table 1 provides the spatial coordinates and elevations of the test pits and boreholes.
Coordinates and elevations were ascertained with Trimble GNSS survey equipment.

in 2009 designates the sediments in the project site as Dredged sand excavated by the U.S Bureau of Reclamation between 1949 – 1953 during a channelization project (Malmon et al, 2009).
Groundwater Conditions Groundwater is shallow at the project site and is highly influenced by the water surface elevation of the Colorado River. The USGS manages a gauging station located approximately 2 miles north of the project site and elevations are recorded every 15 minutes. Figure 3 shows the water surface elevation of the Colorado River for a 12-month period. During the time the field work was conducted, the river stage fluctuated between 457.71 and 460.67, and the inlet to the firebreak canal was fully inundated with water. Water levels were taken the morning of May 7th from the two monitoring wells that were constructed in DH-21-1 and DH-21-2, the depths to water below land surface were 11.72’ and 10.45’, respectively.

Field Methods
Boreholes The boreholes were advanced using a CME-75 (Central Mining Equipment Company) hollow-stem auger drill-rig equipped with an automatic hammer for standard penetration test. The hollow-stem auger flights were 3.5 inches inside diameter and the drill rods used for penetration testing were 2.6 inches outside diameter. Penetration testing was performed by pneumatically dropping a 140-pound hammer 30 inches.
The SPT split-spoon sampler has external and internal diameters of approximately 2.0 and 1.4 inches respectively. The number of blows required to advance the unlined sampler 0.5 foot was first counted (blow counts), followed by the number of blows required to advance the sampler the remaining 1 foot, up to a total of 50 blows. If the number of blows exceeded 50 counts before advancing the 1-foot depth, then that depth was considered refusal. The percent of recovery was noted, and the sample collected was removed, sealed, and transported to the laboratory for testing.
Continuous sampling was performed to a depth of 30 feet, and then every 5 feet to 60 feet, or until conditions prevented further drilling. During the continuous sampling, a standard penetration test was performed, then the driller performed a clean out and advanced the auger ~3.5 feet before performing the next penetration testing. Below 30 feet, the augers were advanced 5 feet before performing another test.
Drill hole 3 (DH-21-3) was drilled first and had a total depth of 61.1 feet, with the final sample resulting in a lean clay with sand. Drill hole 1 (DH-21-1) was drilled second to a total depth of
56.0 feet. A significant amount of coarse gravel near the bottom of the hole resulted in the auger flights becoming stuck after obtaining the final sample. Drill hole 2 (DH-21-2) was drilled last to a depth of 40.7 feet. The decision was made to conclude drilling at that depth after encountering coarse gravel similar to what was seen in DH-21-1. To document the soil conditions, photos were taken of each opened split-spoon sampler before transferring the material to sample bags.
Photos are included in Appendix D. Lithologic logs of each borehole are included in Appendix A and are comprised of visual classifications, gradation results, and blow counts for each sample interval.
Groundwater was encountered in each borehole between 11.0 and 13.0 feet below land surface.
Drill mud was used once the samples became saturated to mitigate heave in the holes. DH-21-1 and DH-21-2 were completed as monitoring wells, and water samples were taken during air development. Reclamation’s Yuma Area Office Analytical Laboratory provided results from the complete analysis on both samples as well as a sample taken from the Colorado river and they can be seen in Appendix B.
Test Pits Test pits were excavated using a backhoe provided and operated by USFWS. A Nuclear density test was attempted in each test pit at 5 feet; however, the conditions of the soil prevented a successful test as the pin hole would collapse before the probe could be inserted. A backscatter reading was taken at the surface (Appendix A). Target depth of each test pit was 15 feet, or limits of equipment, or until groundwater was encountered. Given the conditions of the material present, total depths reached in TP-21-1 and TP-21-2 were 10’ and 9’, respectively due to continuous collapsing. Samples were taken every 5 feet, or where changes in material were observed. Logs of test pits with visual classifications and lab results are included in Appendix A.
Corrosivity Sampling Corrosivity samples were collected in each of the boreholes and test pits at various depths, shown in Table 2. This was done in the test pits by filling two quart-sized resealable bags with a sample using latex gloves and a stainless-steel spoon and placing them in a gallon-sized bag and transporting in a cooler. A separate borehole was drilled to collect samples for DH-21-3, and a 3-inch split spoon sampler was used to obtain the material. For samples from DH-21-1 and DH-21- 2, material from select SPT tests were chosen for corrosivity testing. Samples from all the boreholes were placed in a quart sized bag, sealed in a gallon-sized bag, and placed in a cooler for transport.

Laboratory Testing Test pit samples and SPT samples from each borehole were tested in the YAO Materials lab.
Testing conducted included Grain Size Distribution (ASTM D6913), Percent Passing #200 sieve (ASTM D1140), and Atterberg Limits (ASTM D4318) where results from previous testing deemed applicable. Results from these tests are included in Appendix A.
A total of 14 Corrosivity samples were delivered to Nicklaus Engineering, Inc. in Yuma, Az for Corrosivity testing series (pH, resistivity, sulfate, and Chloride - ASTM D4972/D4327/G57/D4327). Results provided from the testing are included in Appendix C.
Slug Tests Both monitoring wells, DH-21-1 and DH-21-2, were revisited on November 15th, 2021, to conduct slug tests in order to determine the hydraulic properties of the subsurface material by measuring the instantaneous change in head. These tests were done by installing an In-Situ Level TROLL 500 pressure transducer in the wells where the logging interval was set to take a measurement every 1 second. A beginning reference level was input using the current depth to water from the top of the 2” PVC casing in each well. Reference levels in DH-21-1 and DH-21-2 at the time of the tests were 19.18’ and 17.71’, respectfully. Once the loggers were collecting data, approximately 10 gallons of water were continuously poured into the wells, and the water level was manually measured until it was determined to have reached equilibrium. In each well, the water level quickly returned to its starting point due to the high hydraulic conductivity of the subsurface soil along the banks of the inlet. Results of the slug tests recorded by the pressure transducers are included below (Figures 4 & 5). The wells remained equipped with the transducers and the logging interval was reset to record the water level every hour for long term data collection.
