About this file

This is a visual reference memorandum accompanying Task Order No. 140P8526F0082 for the Rehabilitate Climbing Facilities at Camp Muir project (ECI Project 22-0026.04), dated September 29, 2026. The memo provides illustrative guidance on the anticipated visual character and appearance of stone construction work, specifically addressing three applications: foundation gabions, building-envelope gabion cladding, and site stonework.

The memorandum clarifies that gabion construction should feature stone-filled wire baskets with appropriately sized stone placed to achieve a stable, reasonably dense, and visually consistent finished assembly, without keyed-in masonry, coursed stonework, or tightly fitted dry-stack construction. Site stonework is intended to have an informal character compatible with existing Camp Muir features, specifically referencing loosely placed stone walls rather than carefully constructed dry-stack masonry. Natural variation in stone size, shape, color, orientation, and resulting density is expected. Where specified, rebar staking aids installation and retention of stacked stonework, with variation in joint width, stone size, orientation, and alignment anticipated as part of the intended appearance. The memo emphasizes that reference images communicate general character only and do not represent project-specific design details; the Contract Drawings, Specifications, and other Contract Documents establish actual requirements and govern in case of conflicts. Contractors must provide specified mockups for review prior to proceeding with finished work, and approved mockups will serve as the project-specific basis for confirming acceptable stone selection, placement, density, and visual character.

Memo – Stone Gabion and Site Stonework Visual Reference

This memorandum is provided as a visual reference only to illustrate the general appearance and character anticipated for stone construction associated with the Rehabilitate Climbing Facilities at Camp

Muir project. The reference images are organized into three general applications: foundation gabions, building-envelope gabion cladding, and site stonework.

For the foundation and building-envelope gabions, the images are intended to communicate the general character of the stone placement within the gabion baskets. The design intent is for the gabions to read as stone-filled wire baskets, using appropriately sized stone placed and arranged to provide a stable, reasonably dense, and visually consistent finished assembly. The design does not anticipate keyed-in masonry, coursed stonework, tightly fitted dry-stack construction, or individually shaped and placed stones intended to create the appearance of traditional masonry. Natural variation in stone size, shape, color, orientation, and resulting density is expected based on the available source material.

The site stonework is similarly intended to have an informal character that is compatible with the existing stone features at Camp Muir. Existing site conditions include examples of both carefully constructed dry-stack masonry and more loosely placed stone walls and site features. The latter is the intended visual reference for the new site stonework. Unless specifically indicated otherwise in the Contract Documents, the new work is not intended to replicate the tightly fitted, coursed, or keyed character of the existing dry-stack masonry. Stone should instead be arranged to create stable and functional site feature to mitigate erosion and wind scour of the embedded gabion basket foundations while retaining the irregular, natural character of locally available stone. Where specified, rebar staking is intended to aid installation and retaining of stacked stonework. Variation in joint width, stone size, orientation, and alignment is anticipated and is part of the intended appearance.

The gabion baskets, mesh configuration, connections, anchorage, dimensions, stone requirements, site wall configurations, and other technical aspects shown in the reference photographs should not be interpreted as representing the project-specific design. Some photographs may depict materials, construction methods, or details that differ from those required for this project. The Contract Drawings, Specifications, and other Contract Documents establish the requirements for the work and govern in the event of any difference or perceived conflict with these visual references.

The images are not intended to establish additional contractual requirements, workmanship tolerances, or acceptance criteria beyond those identified in the Contract Documents. Their purpose is to provide

As required by the Contract Documents, the Contractor shall provide the specified mockups for review prior to proceeding with the applicable finished work. The approved mockups will provide the project-specific basis for confirming acceptable stone selection, placement, density, and overall visual character.
