PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.1 PREPARATION
A. Ensure adjacent pavement has a clean straight saw cut line and that the new surface maintains the existing roadway grades.
B. Sub-Grade
1. Fine grade surface to match existing improvements as required by Contract Documents.
2. Compact sub-grade to at least 90% relative compaction per ASTM O 1557.
3.2 INSTALLATION
A. Site Tolerances
1. Sub-Grade - 1.0 inches . Measure using string line from saw cut line to saw cut line, or grade break.
OLYM - 237911, 237918, and 251250 32 12 16- 4
2. Base for asphalt patching-
a. Base shall match existing or be 6 inches thick minimum after compaction, except where shown thicker on Drawings.
b. Measure using string line from saw cut line to saw cut line, or grade break.
3. Base for new pavement shall match the thickness on the typical section shown on the plans.
4. Paving
a. Apply asphaltic concrete paving in single lift to match existing pavement thickness or two (2) inches thick minimum after compaction, except where shown thicker on
Drawings. Paving thicker than three (3) inches may be applied in two lifts, the first two (2) inches thick minimum and the second one and one half (1-1/2) inches thick minimum No lift of HMA shall exceed three and one half (3½) inches after compaction.
b. Paving adjacent to cast-in-place concrete site elements shall be between 1/4 inch higher than concrete and flush with concrete.
c. Surface texture of hand work areas shall match texture of machine-laid areas.
B. Base
1. Lift thickness shall be a maximum of 10 inches loose thickness.
2. Compact as specified in Section 31 23 00.
3. Re-compact unprimed base if it receives precipitation before pavement is laid.
4. Remove or repair improperly prepared areas as directed by Contracting Officer.
C. Asphaltic Concrete Paving
1. Tack coat all saw cut and vertical asphaltic concrete and concrete surfaces that will be in contact with paving.
2. HMA shall not be placed on any wet surface or when average surface temperatures are below those specified in the following table:
SURFACE TEMPERATURE LIMITATION
Compacted Thickness (ft) Wearing Course Other Courses
Less than 0.10 55° F 45° F
0.10 to 0.20 45° F 35° F
0.20 plus 35° F 35° F
3. Place at temperatures between two hundred and three hundred-twenty five degrees F (250 -
325°F) with a self-propelled laydown machine.
4. Longitudinal bituminous joints shall be vertical and properly tack coated if cold.
Transverse joints shall always be tack coated.
OLYM - 237911, 237918, and 251250 32 12 16- 5
5. Compaction -
a. Compact asphaltic concrete paving to at least ninety-one (91) percent of the reference maximum density. Determine percent compaction by dividing density of test cores as determined by either ASTM D 1188 or ASTM D 2726 by laboratory reference density as determined by WSDOT FOP for AASHTO T209.
b. Roll with powered equipment capable of obtaining specified density.
c. Begin breakdown rolling immediately after asphalt is placed when asphalt temperature is at maximum. Complete breakdown rolling before mix temperature drops below two hundred-forty degrees F (240°F) Complete handwork compaction concurrently with breakdown rolling.
d. Complete intermediate rolling as soon as possible after breakdown rolling and before mix temperature drops below one hundred-eighty five degrees F (185°F). Do not roll paving for compaction purposes after asphalt temperature falls below 185 deg F. Do not use vibratory rollers on asphalt after temperature falls below one hundred-eighty five degrees F (185°F)
e. Execute compaction so visibility of joints is minimized. Complete finish rolling to improve asphalt surface as soon as possible after intermediate rolling and while asphalt paving is still warm. Do not use vibration for finish rolling.
6. Surface shall be uniform with no 'birdbaths'. Leave finished surfaces clean and smooth.
Variations from specified grades shall not exceed one-half (1/2) inch.
3.4 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL
A. Site Tests - When tested with ten (10) foot edge, surface of complete work shall not contain irregularities in excess of one-fourth (1/4) inch.
