About this file

Section 09 24 00 – Cement Plastering

This is a specification section for cement plastering work in federal construction projects. The specification requires contractors to apply three-coat cement plaster systems over metal lath substrates, with factory-prepared plaster mixes applied to specified thicknesses: a 3/8-inch first coat, a 1/32 to 1/16-inch leveling coat, and a 1/8-inch finish coat with an evenly sanded surface using medium grain sand. Jobsite-mixed plaster must comply with ASTM C150/C150M Type I Portland cement, clean well-graded sand per ASTM C897, and potable water free of contaminants. All applications must follow ASTM C926 and manufacturer instructions, with base coats fully embedding metal lath and leveling coats fully embedding 4.5 oz/sq yd alkali-resistant reinforcing mesh. Contraction joints must be scribed every specified distance in each direction, cutting through two-thirds of plaster depth.

Quality assurance requires installers to be companies with minimum three years documented experience in plastering work. Submittals include product data on plaster materials and trim accessories, plus two 18" by 18" samples demonstrating finish color and texture. A mock-up panel measuring 4 feet wide by 4 feet high must be constructed at the jobsite showing each installation phase including framing and reinforcement. Exterior plaster application is prohibited when substrate or ambient air temperature is 40°F (4°C) or lower, or when temperatures are expected to drop below 40°F within 48 hours of application. Maximum variation from true flatness tolerance is 1/8 inch in 10 feet (3 mm in 3 m).
