MACA Replace Generator
Questions and Answers
1) Question: Can you please provide a cut sheet for the new generator so that we can obtain weight.
Answer: Generator Cut sheet posted with this amendment
2) Question: On Drawing C5 there is a note to “remove and replace concrete truncated domes”. Several of the existing “domes” are cracked and broken”. Are we to use new “domes” for this portion of the work.
Answer: Yes, as indicated in the drawings, the existing truncated domes are to be removed and replaced with new units. The new domes must meet be installed in accordance with project specifications.
3) Question: On Drawing C6 there is a line for electrical supply from the NEW Transformer to the existing utility pole. It has a NOTE 5 attached to the drawn line. According to the cut section 1 on
Drawing F6.1, this supply line should be encased in concrete with that at encasement at least 42” below grade. Based on the depiction of the path of this encasement, we will be crossing through what is only depicted as the old boardwalk. We realize the old boardwalk is being replaced in a current project. There is no depiction of the NEW boardwalk. What is the materials/design in this section of boardwalk that we will demo and then have to reinstall with this contract?
Answer: The section of the boardwalk that will be impacted by this work will consist of exposed aggregate concrete. Any demolition required to install the underground electrical conduit must be followed by restoration using the same exposed aggregate concrete to match the surrounding construction.
4) Question: As per Specifications Section 26 36 23 #1.4B and #1.6B, it references “automatic transfer switches”. It would appear the existing transfer switch located near the existing generator remains. It would appear that this contract is to only purchase one transfer switch for the NEW transformer. Please verify.
Answer: Correct. This contract includes the provision and installation of one new automatic transfer switch (ATS-1) associated with the new transformer installation in the hotel utility yard. As indicated on the electrical one-line diagram (Sheet E7.1), ATS-1 is new and serves the hotel’s main distribution board
(MDP). The existing transfer switch at the visitor center is to remain in place and is not part of this contract's scope of supply or installation.
5) Question: It would appear that there is NO connection for the service of the family cabins to the new generator in this contract. However, it has been mentioned that the generator will provide emergency backup power for the family cabins. Please verify that there is NO connection to the family cabins in this contract.
Answer: Affirmative. There will be no connection to the family cabins.
6) Question: Would like verification that this system has been reviewed and designed to operate to provide emergency backup power to either of the locations on separate power interruption situations. If the power has an issue at only the Visitor Center, is the system designed to be an emergency system for the VC while not creating a blow back to the hotel that still has normal power.
Answer: This is verified. See pages E1.2, E3.1, and E5.1
7) Question: Please confirm that this contract has NO new concrete work for the section of walk between the hotel and family cabins that will tie the front of the hotel into the new boardwalk. However we will come back to grade into the sidewalk that will be built by others.
Answer: Confirmed. This contract does not include new concrete work for the walkway section between the hotel and the family cabins that will connect to the new boardwalk. Grading up to the future sidewalk is included, to allow for a proper tie-in with the boardwalk that will be constructed under a separate contract. Please refer to Note 5 on Sheet C6, which states:
“Proposed electrical alignment shown for context, final alignment is to be finalized between NPS and
Kentucky Utilities (KU).”
This note reflects the coordination required in the area but does not imply additional concrete scope for this contract
8) Question: On drawing E1.1 Note 1: This notes references removal of existing underground feeders. Are the existing feeders direct bury cables or cable in conduit. If it is cable in conduit. Are the conductors being removed or the conductors and conduit to be removed
Answer: The existing underground feeders referenced are installed in conduit. The intent is to remove both the conductors and associated conduit as part of the demolition scope. The contractor shall verify existing conditions in the field prior to removal.
9) Question: In the specifications pg 267 item D: Can the government provide more detail as to types and quantities of the items to be removed.
Answer: The contractor should anticipate removal of electrical equipment associated with the existing generator system, including but not limited to: the generator itself, disconnects, conduit runs, and associated support structures as shown in the demolition plans.
10) Question: For the generator that is already onsite and is to be installed: Who is responsible for the generator startup?
Answer: Generator startup and commissioning will be the responsibility of the contractor.
11) Question: The lower portion of the generator that appears to be a stand that is black in color. Is this to remain on the generator or is it just for transport?
Answer: The black lower portion of the generator is a transport frame and is not intended to remain as part of the permanent installation. The generator must be mounted per manufacturer and project requirements
12) Question: How much does the generator weigh?
Answer: About 14,000 pounds
13) Question: How is the generator to be mounted in the generator yard?
Answer: The generator shall be mounted on the designated concrete pad within the generator yard. All mounting shall comply with the manufacturer's requirements and project drawings, including anchoring, vibration isolation, and grounding as specified.
14) Question: Can the government provide as built drawings for the underground electrical?
Answer: Available as-built drawings for the existing underground electrical system will be provided to the extent they exist. These will be shared as a reference only and must be field verified by the contractor.
The contractor remains responsible for confirming existing conditions prior to excavation or tie-in work
15.) Question: What does the government wish to do with the old generator?
Answer: The existing generator is to be removed and delivered by the contractor to a location within 10 miles of the project site, as directed by the Contracting Officer. Coordination for delivery location and method will be handled during construction.
16.) Question: Can we have an updated set of drawings for the project that is completely legible. The ones we have to review had lines through many documents and faded in locations. Very difficult to try to see what is happening.
Answer: High-resolution 11x17 hard copies of the project plans are available upon request. These can be picked up in person at the Facility Management Office at Mammoth Cave National Park. Please contact park staff in advance to arrange pickup.
17.) Question: Has LGE/KU been contacted in regard to this project and confirmed new transformer can be put in an enclosure.
Answer: No, LG&E/KU has not been contacted at this stage. Coordination with all local utility providers, including confirming transformer requirements and enclosure compatibility, will be the responsibility of the contractor.
18.) Question: Is attachment 5 mandatory or can we utilize our own project experience template if it meets the formatting requirements?
Answer: Contractor can utilize our own project experience template as long as it meets the formatting requirements
19.) Is attachment 4 mandatory of use or can we utilize a previously received PPQ?
