About this file

This document is a Questions and Answers file for a National Park Service (NPS) project involving ship rail replacement. The document addresses contractor inquiries about detailed shop drawings, concrete step conditions, welding procedures, and vertical post specifications. Key responses include: referencing Drawing C5 for ship rail details, noting that the contractor is responsible for shop drawings; confirming that concrete work on steps is not part of the project scope; indicating the contractor must follow OSHA welding standards; and providing guidance on cast vertical posts, which may have a non-perfectly smooth surface matching existing posts. The NPS consistently directs the contractor to follow the Statement of Work for specific guidance.

Questions and answers

Can the Park Service provide any more detailed shop drawings for the existing Ship Rail to be replaced, or a detail on how the new railing is to be built?

As the intent to exactly match the existing rail, fitting for fitting, we want ensure we have all connections accounted for to match.

The concrete on either side of the steps leading into the dune area is cracked and broken in some areas. Are these to be repaired, even though there are no railings being installed alongside the steps?

The railing detail provided calls for welding. If any welding needs to be done in the field, what are procedures for firewatch, if any? Are these requirements included with the NPS hot work permit?

Answers:

• Drawing C5, in the solicitation, provides a detailed section and plan view of the ship rail. Contractor is responsible for shop drawings.

• Per the scope of work, concrete work on the steps is not included in this project.

• Contractor is responsible for the safety plan and following all OSHA specific standards and requirements for welding.

Another critical question is regarding the vertical posts, which are specified to be made from castings. The cast posts will not have a perfectly smooth surface, but if the existing posts were cast, they will match perfectly.

Please confirm our understanding.

Answer:

• Please follow the Statement of Work.
