The NCA parks include: Antietam National Battlefield, Catoctin Mountain Park, Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park, George Washington Memorial Parkway, Harpers Ferry National Historical Park, Manassas National Battlefield Park, Monocacy National Battlefield, National Capital Parks - East, National Mall and Memorial Parks, Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail, President’s Park, Prince William Forest Park, Rock Creek Park, and Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts.
D.1 BACKGROUND
Manassas National Battlefield Park preserves nearly 5,000 acres of historic land and structures, archeological sites, and cultural landscapes. In addition, the park provides habitat for a wide variety of plants, birds, and other wildlife.
The park contains 40 miles of hiking and equestrian trails and host an average of 600,000 visitors each year. In two fierce battles fought thirteen months apart, Union, and Confederate armies clashed near Manassas, Virginia over the same ground. Many features of the battlefields survive today, including the Stone House, Unfinished Railroad, and the historic road network.
D.2 PURPOSE
According to the Manassas National Battlefield Park’s 2011 General Management Plan, and as recommended in the 2018 Chinn Ridge Cultural Landscape Report (CLR), the park is conducting Phase One vegetation management (deforestation) of key viewsheds in the Chinn Ridge area of the park. This project, consisting of Tasks 20 – 23 and Task 28 of the Chinn Ridge CLR, entails the clearing and removal of all trees/vegetation, plus post clearing ground preparation and seeding, in five separate task areas totaling approximately 19.5 acres. This project is one phase of the effort to restore the landscape to its historic appearance during the first and second battles of Manassas.
