Site Report and Assessment
Prepared by Solid Light, Inc.
November 30, 2020
PROJECT OVERVIEW
Solid Light’s consulting role on this project is to evaluate the George Washington Carver Museum’s collections and exhibits and make recommendations related to their disassembly, packing, storage, and re-installation in the context of the overall project construction needs. Additionally, this evaluation reviews budget implications for the collec-tions and exhibits move and comment on any accessibility issues related to the current installation.
SITE REPORT
The on-site evaluation was conducted October 27 and 28, 2020. Following a preliminary walkthrough, physical ex-hibits were photographed and investigated for general fabrication, construction, and installation methods.
Exhibit construction and installation methods falls nominally into four categories (keyed plans shown on the follow-ing page):
• Built-in structures
• Freestanding structures, cases, props, or risers (no overhead support)
• Freestanding walls braced to overhead grid
• Freestanding walls braced to exterior wall
The artifacts/specimens displayed and incorporated into the exhibits were spot checked (when accessible) for confir-mation of mounting methodology and presence of permanent accession numbers.
The following report sections are:
• Exhibit Construction Diagrams
• Site Documentation Notes
• Summary of Options/Recommendations - SEE SPECIFICATIONS
• Preliminary Cost Information - REDACTED
• Exhibit accessibility notes - SEE SPECIFICATIONS

EXHIBIT CONSTRUCTION DIAGRAMS
Figure 2.1 : Freestanding plank exhibit wall west of main entry. This wall is easily removed and re-installed. Non-collections based material such as rack cards, flags, and display monitor , etc. are assumed to be stored on-site during construction.
Figure 2.2: Freestanding mechanical interactive at distal end of plank wall (left). Mechanical interactive is heavy, stable, and functioning. It is a potential candidate for remaining on site during work. To the right is an audio interactive (see phone receiver) that is minimally functioning and is not universally accessible.
SITE DOCUMENTATION NOTES
The following section documents the current state of the exhibits and notes features, methods, of other considerations that may influence how the exhibits and collections should be handled during the upcoming construction/repair work.
Figure 2.3: Interior of plank divider wall. Freestanding low riser (gravel-filled trough) for artifact display. Displays on stems gen-erally lift out of the base. Some artifacts/specimens can remain in their cases for transport and storage, others items will require dismounting and discreet packing. The Diorama/display case is freestanding and while movable―it is quite heavy.
Figure 2.4 : The corner cabin is a permanently installed exhibit prop in the SW gallery. It houses artifacts, interpre-tive panels, and an inoperable media display. At a minimum, the roof will need disassembly to gain access to repair the walls behind. It is likely that the entire structure will need to be moved to get repair access to the walls and win-dows behind. The interior and porch roof may require sprinklers.
Figure 2.5: Freestanding display unit braced to the ceiling, plank wall/display riser and cab-in seen in the background. Articulated ox skeleton to be removed from display and stored during repairs.
Figure 2.6: Viewing the gallery’s west doors. The two (nominally 4’ x 8’) vertical display walls are tied the exterior with a sleeved (possibly all-thread) brace. Both units should be removed during construction work.
Figure 2.7: Left to Right as viewed from west doors: Laboratory display behind acrylic barrier; Parti-tion wall with graphics; Freestanding display risers.
Figure 2.8: Looking toward west doors. At center left is reverse side of articulated ox skeleton display.
At center right (two-panel grey wall) is the reverse of the partition wall shown in previous image.
Figure 2.9: On axis view of displays from west doors looking east.
Figure 2.10: View of space behind NW corner laboratory display.
Figure 2.11: Display risers (right) and freestanding parti-tion walls (left). It is likely that this freestanding installa-tion will need to be removed for construction.
Figure 2:12: Freestanding display riser along north wall.
Figure 2.13: Freestanding exhibit partition walls and display case with vitrine in foreground.
Freestanding walls and smaller display cases should be moved during the construction work.
Figure 2.14: North wall looking east from exhibit riser shown in 2.12. At left is a dimensional cut-out mural braced to exterior wall. The west and east ends of the main level exhibits are generally divided by a common space/ programming area adjacent to the elevators (seen with meeting tables and chairs).
Figure 2:15: Programming area also contains a prop display wagon. The wagon can be disassembled removed, but it is also a candidate for remaining intact during the construction work and moved as necessary. The largest fea-tures of the North main level exhibits are seen in the distance: “Carver’s Environmental Laboratory” and the
“Movable School” panel truck.
Figure 2.16: The Environmental Laboratory exhibit is a permanent free-standing installation. It appears that new carpet was installed up to the exhibits wood flooring. The interior is not currently sprinkled. It may be possible to remove the translucent ceiling panels for sprinkler coverage or installation. Depend-ing on the level of access required to repair the exterior wall, the display may require moving.
Figure 2.17: The perimeter of the exhibit is inset from the exterior wall. There is access to this space from a door near the east en-trance.
Figure 2.18: A complete test was not conduct-ed, but on cursory inspection, it appears that none the digital media or interactive displays are functional.
Figure 2.19: The east half of the main level gallery features several stand alone pan-els and vitrine covered cases. Removal and storage of these exhibit components is less complicated than the layout at the west end of this level.
Figure 2.20: The Movable School display is a full scale panel truck on a structural riser.
Given the scale and weight of the object, it is recommended that a way to protect the vehi-cle be found and it remain in place during construction.
Figure 2.21: This camera is among the larger artifacts that will need to be removed form the site and stored.
Figure 2.22: This display is on the lower level out-side of staff offices. Artifacts are mounted to an interior acrylic base. Given the weight and size of the vitrine and base, it would be ideal to leave it on site after the artifacts have been stored.
Figure 2.23: This vignette on the lower level is easily removed during construction. There is a mix of arti-facts and educational props―non-artifact material such as props could remain on site during construction if room is available.
Figure 2.24: This medical-history focused exhibit on the lower level is easily moved if necessary. The green “iron lung” artifact at left can be moved to safety on site or removed and stored.
