Amendment Five 140P2019R0022

The purpose of this Amendment is answer additional questions received.

1. The following questions have been received and answered:

Q29: Flying of all stone from Quarry is by Helicopter. Correct?

A29: This is an acceptable means of transporting the stone from the quarry. This method was used in the construction of the nearby restroom building in the 1990s.

Q30: All masonry cleaning water runoff must be captured. Correct?

A30: Per 040140.91, 1.3F water runoff from masonry activities shall be captured, contained and removed from site. However, NPS will consider an area for the captured runoff to be dried/evaporated to allow less waste material to be hauled out. Means and methods of such will be GC responsibility and CO approval will be needed for the site staging area.

Q31: National Christmas tree lumber - meant to be balusters of interior railing, can we also maybe use for lamp shelfs if not enough wood is salvageable from tree? What are the shelves to be made of?

A31: The interior railings are the primary use for the National Christmas tree. If wood remains, it may indeed be used for lamp shelves. Otherwise, furniture grade Douglas-fir to be used in the lamp shelves.

Q32: Fall Protection Anchor – As drawn does not meet the spec for the anchor. Anchor points cannot exceed 8’ apart.

A32: It is our understanding that neither OSHA nor ANSI requires a specific spacing and that the 8’ is only a recommendation in the product literature. The layout shown on Plan S1.3 was specifically directed by the NPS and should be followed.

Q33: Asphalt removal: Tars/Asphalt oils leach into stone, some shadowing may be left after cleaning. If some shadowing is left, is this an acceptable level of clean? If not will poultice be required to remove shadow?

A33: Asphalt removal products must be tested on site as described in 040140.91, section 3.10, and results are subject to Contracting Officer’s approval. However, some shadowing has been anticipated and will likely be acceptable.

Q34: Tar removal requires large amount of water to prevent streaking, most tar removers require a minimum of 6 gals per minute pressure washing equipment, anything less could leave streaking behind. Is enough water available on site to provide 6 gallons per minute?

A34: Please see the water availability as outlined in the Project Constraints.

Q35: Would it be possible to use spec-mix pre-bagged mortar?

A35: Agreed, pre-mix would be convenient and save time, but is likely not feasible.

Mixture needs to match Spec Section 04 05 13 Part 2.2C. Mortar samples are available; see image:

Q36: We need to know anchor size and embedment for flitch plates noted on details 1 &3 on Page S5.31.

A36: Corner flitches are called out on Plan S1.3 as B8HS3 and B12HS4, with specific HSS flitch to log connection requirements shown on the S5.02 Details. HSS to stone connection requirements are shown as a minimum on the S5.31 Sections using collector adhesive anchors per 4/S5.01.

Q37: Is the current ground loop for the lightning protection intact and can be re-used? Or is a new one required to be dug in.

A37: See previously answered questions 27 and 28 in Amendment Four.

Q38: Ice & Water shield is stapled but it did get warm enough onsite after application, so it is fully adhered as well.

A38: Anticipate a complete layer of new Ice and Water Shield to overlay the existing.

Q39: Question from Pella Window supplier: The window specs have lots of non-typical requirements that needed to have our factory approve before I can bid. I sent the custom request in Monday and got back approval on all items except one. The specs and details show a TDL (true divided light) ogee style grill with single glass. We are unable to do the TDL type grill, but we can do an SDL (simulated divided light) as per attached details. The SDL would have the ogee profile as show, but will be adhered to both sides of the single glass. The TDL will not meet not structural test requirements. We can meet all of the other specified items and would like to bid the job if the grill issue does not cause an issue. Let me know your thoughts.

A39: Due to the building being a National Historic Landmark (NHL) and the required State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) approvals, the windows need to be TDL and not a grill or simulated divided lite. It may be possible to reduce the structural test requirements in order to maintain the historic character since the windows will be protected by shutters for much of the year.

Q40: There is no ¼” round trim shown at the base of the wall framing or at the top of the walls where walls abut the bottom of the roof T&G deck. We assume there needs to be to match the other terminations of the wall paneling.

A40: No, trim at these junctions were purposely omitted to reflect historic conditions.

This detail requires finer attention to the cut of the planks.

Q41: We believe the grade called for the 1x6 T&G was incorrectly stated and not in the historic context of the building. We are wondering if Select Tight Knot #2 and Better rather than C grade, which we believe is a clear product, free of knots. To go with a higher grade will increase the cost considerably. The above grade assumption is what we put up last year on the roof.

Select Tight Knot #2 and Better. But it is pine not Dug fir.

A41 It is our understanding that Douglas fir finish material products like tongue and groove flooring and siding is often sold in two classes. The higher class is known alternatively as “c and better” or “clear vertical grain (CVG)”. The less refined grade is “character” or “rustic” grade. We require the upper “c and better” grade for the wall planks, which is to receive stain, but the less refined grade can be submitted for flooring, which is to be painted. The underside of the roof was not to be painted.

Q42: Spec 101400 refers to the original signage. What does it look like?

A42: Below is an image of an original door sign.
