On Monday October 27, 2014 and Tuesday October 28, 2014, soil borings were taken in 13 locations, excluding multiple tries at one boring location. The intent of the borings was to document the depth to bed rock or refusal due to difficult drilling that might affect the depth of burial of the proposed new sewer lines. Boring logs indicating the depth achieved at each location, and map showing surveyed locations attached.
Three soil samples were submitted for analysis for Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons gasoline and diesel and BTEX (Benzene, Toluene, Ethylbenzene, and Xylene) either due to the boring location or a slight odor. Samples (SB-1, SB-1 B and SB-9) had minimal detections of gasoline and BTEX. Based on our experience and knowledge of the site conditions we believe that these detections are residual gasoline from small surface spills or present from the previous UST removal and upgrade.
In SB-1 B Diesel was detected at 220 mg/kg. Although the laboratory noted the compounds detected were heavier than Diesel fuel. It is our experience that these detections are likely residual asphaltic compounds that leach into soil below asphaltic pavements. Most counties consider the presence of Diesel to be a concern when detections exceed 1,000 mg/kg.
Based on these laboratory results we believe that the detections of gasoline and Diesel fuel do not pose a significant risk and likely residual concentrations from small spills or asphaltic pavements. If during construction, staining or obvious evidence of gasoline or Diesel fuel are observed, P&P staff should be notified to collect samples or make appropriate recommendations.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Dave or Stephanie.
