PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1 EXAMINATION

A. Evaluate site conditions. If any other landscape contractor is in charge of the subbase and base course preparation, advise Contracting Officer about any derogation from specified preparation and refrain from excavation until site conditions have been corrected.

GWMP-216010 32 13 11 - 5

B. Evaluate that the layout of the project is as indicated on the drawings. Notify the Contracting Officer and do not proceed until the layout of the project matches the drawings.

C. Make sure all required materials and tools are on-site and available to proceed to the installation properly.

3.2 INSTALLATION OF POROUS SURFACING SYSTEM – MIXING METHOD FOR A

PAVEMENT

A. Subgrade Preparation:

1. Excavate and shape foundation soils to grades, elevations, and dimensions as indicated on the drawings. Be sure water will flow away from any structures. Install moisture barrier if projects meets a foundation with a basement.

2. Confirm foundation soil meets specified compaction through proof rolling or other conventional method and is examined by the Contracting Officer. If unacceptable foundation soils are encountered, excavate affected areas and replace these areas with suitable quality material as directed by the Contracting Officer. For subgrade soil compaction a vibratory plate, compactor, or roller is recommended.

B. Base Preparation:

1. Installation constitutes acceptance by the Contractor of existing conditions and assuming responsibility for satisfactory performance of the system.

2. For subgrade or base preparation, level and clear the area of large objects such as rocks, or pieces of wood. Excavate area allowing for unit thickness and top layer. Leave a minimum of 2.75’’ (70mm) for honeycomb confinement grid panels and top layer to meet final grade.

3. Place the panels. Position the panels on the prepared subgrade previously covered with geotextile membrane. Cut to shape with aviation shears or skill saw with fine-toothed blade. Use protective gloves to avoid abrasions.

4. All hard surfaces abutting areas to receive Gravel Surfacing shall be in place prior to commencing work. Finished gravel work shall be no more or no less than 3/8" below adjacent hard surfaces. Adjust Crushed Aggregate levels accordingly so that this will be possible.

5. Place first row of panels against a stationary edge if possible. Stagger panels in a bricklayer pattern. The panels have interlocking connectors; however most installations do not require them to be used. Use connectors only in areas with greater traffic or steeper grades.

6. Fill cells with chosen infill. Maximum particle size of granular infill material must not exceed 9.53mm (.375 inches). Minimum particle size should be 3.18 mm (.125 inches) to allow porosity. Cell walls must be sufficiently covered with infill to prevent any equipment or load bearing vehicular traffic from damaging the grid.

7. Compact infill to a minimum 90 percent of SPDD.

8. Contour compacted surface to a specified elevation and grade as indicated on the drawings.

9. Install steel edge restraint.

C. Mixing and Installation of Top Layer

1. Clean stones thoroughly. Allow to dry(less than 10% humidity). Aggregates must be free from any fines or dirt (less than 5% of fines). The cleaner the stones, the stronger the resin to gravel bond.

GWMP-216010 32 13 11 - 6

2. Do not install if rain is expected within 12 hours.

3. Mix stones in a five gallon plastic bucket, wheelbarrow or cement mixer. Cement mixer can be cleaned up with acetone before liquid cures.

4. Mix stones with liquid to coat them until they are wet. Resin’s ratio per 5 gallon bucket of stones will be determined by manufacturer. Consult manufacturer for assistance.

5. Working in small areas, pour out the coated stones, level and trowel to finish to desired thickness (at least 1"). Rope off treated area to protect it from people and animals.

6. In case of unexpected rain, protect the area with plastic tarps, leave it a minimum of 2ft distance between surface and tarps to allow a proper ventilation.

7. Install when outdoor temperature is 50 degrees F or above and will not drop below 50 degrees F for at least 12 hours. Allow 24 hours to cure. If the temperature is around 40 degrees F then it may take up to 48 hours to cure.

8. If desired, apply roller coat using the same resin and medium sized paint roller. This replenishes some liquid that has migrated downward during the curing process due to gravity and provides a ‘double-bond’ effect. Rope off treated area to protect it from people and animals. Do not apply roller coat if rain is expected within 12 hours. Do not cover area with plastic. Apply roller coat when outdoor temperature is 50 degrees F or above and will not drop below 50 degrees F for at least 12 hours. Allow to cure 24 hours.

9. Pour out the coated stones placing them into the desired areas. Trowel can be used if necessary to smooth it out. Note: Be careful to not get the coated stones on any surrounding pavements, flagstones, edges, borders etc. It can stain those areas permanently. Protect those surrounding pavements, edges or borders with masking tape. Rope off treated area to protect it from people and animals. Do not apply roller coat if rain is expected within 12 hours. Install when outdoor temperature is 50 degrees F or above and will not drop below 50 degrees F for at least 12 hours. If the temperature is around 50 degrees F then it may take up to 48 hours to cure.

D. Post Placement

1. Reserve 150 pounds (bagged in min 25lbs) of top layer crushed stones for repairs/correcting top layer. Store on site in a weather-proof area so that material will be available for use necessary.

2. Snow plowing – Use shovels or blades with plastic/rubber blades.

3. Use of salt for de-icing is allowed.

4. All bonded aggregate pavements require regular inspection and periodic removal of accumulated sediment from the surface. Clogging typically occurs near the pavement surface. If the surface is slow draining, high performance vacuum equipment (It is recommended that regenerative air vacuum equipment be used annually to clean the pavement surface) may restore the permeability and should be tried first. The primary maintenance requirement for bonded aggregate paving is to clean the surface drainage voids. Fine debris and dirt accumulate in the drainage openings and reduce the pavement’s flow capacity. It is natural for clogging to occur over time, but routine maintenance can reduce this problem.

3.3 INSPECTION

A. Inspect finished installation to establish compliance with ABAAS and DSC requirements. Use DSC - CQC Accessibility Inspection Report as basis for recordation. Submit Report to CO for review and final approval. Record observations and supplement with sketches, descriptive data and notes, drawings, measurements, digital images, etc. Coordinate inspections with

GWMP-216010 32 13 11 - 7

construction schedule and commence inspection immediately after work is completed. Submit Report to CO no more than one day (24 hours) after performing inspection.
