About this file

This document is an informational brochure describing the RV Gannet (R5202), a 52-foot research vessel recently commissioned by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) for the Gray's Reef National Marine Sanctuary (GRNMS). The vessel, custom-built by All American Marine and commissioned in January 2024, is designed to support marine research, diving operations, and scientific surveys throughout the South Atlantic Bight region. The RV Gannet accommodates up to 15 passengers and a crew of 3, with key specifications including twin Cummins QSC8.3 engines rated at 500 MHP, a maximum speed of 23 knots, a 600-gallon fuel capacity, and a 5-foot draft suitable for both inland waterways and offshore routes. The vessel features approximately 250 square feet of aft deck working space, a wet laboratory for specimen examination, a dry laboratory with data processing capabilities, and a 12-foot skiff stored on deck.

The RV Gannet is equipped with advanced navigation and scientific systems, including a LENOVO navigation computer running Nobeltec Time Zero, dual Seatronx pilot house displays, Simrad autopilot, Furuno weather station, and vessel monitoring systems. Additional features include an adjustable A-frame with 3,500-pound capacity, dual drum winches capable of reaching 200-meter depths, scuba storage for 18 dive tanks, a Morgan 300.4 crane, and state-of-the-art communication systems. The vessel supports multiple mission types including deploying ocean monitoring equipment to 200 meters, ocean acidification research, expanded scuba dive capabilities, contaminant and marine debris monitoring, multi-day missions, and long-term ecosystem monitoring. The RV Gannet operates in conjunction with the RV Sam Gray to serve Gray's Reef National Marine Sanctuary, the only protected natural reef between Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, and Cape Canaveral, Florida, located 19 miles offshore from Georgia's coast.

52’ Research Vessel Joins GRNMS Fleet

The 52’ RV Gannet, custom-built by All American Marine, will be joining the Gray’s Reef National Marine Sanctuary (GRNMS) vessel fleet in January 2024. The vessel is based on design elements from the recently commissioned RV Storm Petrel, another All American Marine custom-build for Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary. RV Gannet is built to navigate inland waterways and offshore ocean routes, primarily serving as a research and dive platform for GRNMS and partners throughout the South Atlantic Bight. This vessel can accommodate up to 15 passengers and a crew of 3. Its twin engines provide speed and exceptional fuel efficiency to achieve NOAA’s missions while bolstering the stewardship and conservation of the marine ecosystems it serves.

Gray’s Reef National Marine Sanctuary stands as the only protected natural reef between Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, to Cape Canaveral, Florida. The sanctuary is situated on the mid-continental shelf 19 miles from Georgia’s coast in the Atlantic Ocean. It’s a rare gem in the broader expanse of the ocean. The sanctuary has a long legacy of scientific research from regional connections to coastal rivers and marshes, to ocean-wide migrations of marine life.

About the Northern Gannet

The northern gannet (Morus bassanus) is a large seabird known for its striking appearance, long-distanced flights, and exceptional diving abilities. With a distinctive white plumage, yellowish head, and long, pointed wings, these birds are expert fishers, plunging from great heights into the ocean to catch their prey with remarkable precision.

Ample workspace in the main deck for data collection & processing.
