About this file
This document is a well drilling log spanning from August 1937 through May 1938, documenting the progressive drilling activities, geological formations encountered, and operational challenges at a new well site near Dubois/Idaho Falls, Wyoming.
The drilling operation began in August 1937 at a depth of 5 feet and advanced to 440 feet by the end of the documented period in May 1938. The well encountered predominantly volcanic formations including lava, basalt, ryolite, ash layers, and cinders in the upper sections (0-350 feet), followed by grey and dark grey sand, conglomerate, and black lava in deeper sections (350-763 feet). Significant operational difficulties included recurring equipment failures (broken wrist pins, manilla lines, spudding shafts, bond wheels, and samson posts), caving issues requiring hole straightening and refilling, and challenging drilling conditions through hard volcanic material. The operation involved multiple tool changes, bit resurfacing trips to Idaho Falls, casing installation (10-inch casing run to 717 feet with 26 sacks of cement), and a 24-hour pump test completed May 14-15, 1938, which yielded approximately 63 gallons per minute with a water level at 670 feet. The well reached total depth at 763-765 feet by May 1938, with final activities including liner installation, cleaning operations, and pump testing before completion.
