About this file
This is a Report of Well Driller filed with the Idaho Department of Reclamation documenting a replacement well drilled at the U.S. Experiment Station in Dubois, Idaho. The well was drilled using rotary method and threaded/welded casing construction with 250-wall concrete material. The drilled hole measured 12 inches in diameter with a total depth of 856 feet and standing water level of 71 feet below ground. Test delivery yielded no measurable flow, and the well exhibited a leak around the casing.
The well drilling operations occurred between June 25, 1966 and October 7, 1966, with the well designed for use as a range well. Detailed stratigraphic data documents geological formations encountered from surface to total depth, including various lava types (broken lava, solid red lava, hard grey lava), clay, boulders, and cinders from depths ranging from 0 to 670 feet. Critical findings indicate first water was encountered at 774 feet in softer red lava formation, with sand streaks between 774 and 780 feet and an 8-inch casing installed in that interval. At the final 832-856 foot interval, black lava with cinder streaks were encountered, with the well bailed for 5 hours at approximately 15 gallons per minute but unable to lower water levels noticeably. The report was signed by H.P. Cope Well Drilling on January 15, 1967 under License No. 28.
