About this file
This document is a well log report from the USDA, Agricultural Research Service, located at the U.S. Sheep Experiment Station in Dubois, Idaho (HC 62 Box 2010, Dubois, ID 83423). The log documents geological strata and well conditions for a well designated as "Well log - Dubois 2, Rain Well, Bldg 21."
The well was started on August 11, 1937, and the log provides a detailed stratigraphic profile from the surface to approximately 765 feet depth. Key geological features include basalt layers at 35 feet, rhyolite and lava deposits from 80 to 165 feet, layers of thin cinders and lava ash from 145 to 165 feet, broken lava and lava ash deposits, gray hard lava at 355 feet, red clay and lava cinders at 395 feet, hard black lava at 405 feet, and transitions into red lava, dark gray sand, gray lava, and gray fine sand layers at depths between 470 and 590 feet. The bottom section records black lava at 717 feet, dark gray lava at 750 feet, and gravel conglomerate at 764 feet. Handwritten annotations indicate a water level measurement of 6 feet 11¾ inches from the well head at the top of the 10-inch casing, with the first water struck at 687 feet elevation. Additional operational notes from 1920, 1970, and 1976 document pump installations and replacements, including a Baghdadjian pump installed in June 1922 and subsequent modifications through 1976 involving pipe extensions and pump replacements.
