About this file
This is a technical drawing detail sheet for road repair work on the M4 Road at Mendocino National Forest, Gringstone Ranger District, prepared by the United States Department of Agriculture Forest Service (R05 Pacific Southwest region).
The drawing depicts the reconstruction of a failed road section caused by culvert failure, showing cross-sectional profiles comparing pre-failure ground conditions, post-failure conditions, and the reconstructed surface profile. Key construction requirements include: removal of the existing 18-inch corrugated metal pipe (CMP) and installation of a new 24-inch CMP at a continuous 10% grade (4-foot drop over 40-foot run); excavation 10 feet below the existing road surface; backfilling of unsuitable material in accordance with Section 203 specifications; construction of a geogrid-stabilized structure with Type III geogrid for the base tier and Tiers 1-3, with specific fabric turnup and layback requirements (24-inch lift with fabric turned up and laid back no less than 36 inches); placement of Class 3 riprap slope armor and Class 1, Type C riprap at the outlet apron on geotextile fabric extending at least 8 inches beyond placed rock; and proper fabrication of the outlet fitting in the drop-inlet to accommodate the angled connection. All unsuitable excavated material must be disposed of off government lands in accordance with local and state regulations, and the post-failure profile modifications from recent temporary repairs are noted as acceptable with essential conditions maintained as shown.

NOTES:
1. THE "APPROXIMATE FAILURE PLANE" IS
PROJECTED FROM SURFACE
INDICATORS WHICH SUGGEST A FILL
FAILURE PRECIPITATED BY THE
CULVERT FAILURE. THE PLANNED
EXCAVATION IS 10' BELOW THE
EXISTING ROAD SURFACE.
2. THE EXISTING 18' CMP IS TO BE
REMOVED ENTIRELY. THAT PORTION OF
THE EXCAVATION NOT IN THE AREA OF
THE CONSTRUCTED REINFORCED FILL
SLOPE OR NEW CMP INSTALATION
MUST BE BACKFILLED IN ACCORDANCE
WITH SECTION 203. ALL UNSUITABLE
MATERIAL MUST BE DISPOSED OF OFF
GOVERNMENT LANDS IN ACCORDANCE
WITH LOCAL AND STATE REGULATIONS.
3. THE BASE TIER (BASE MAT) AND TIERS
1-3 MUST UTILIZE TYPE III GEOGRID.
FOR THE BASE MAT, THE FABRIC MUST
BE TURNED UP AND OVER THE 24" LIFT
AND BE LAID BACK NO LESS THAN 36".
THE TIER 1 (T1) GRID IS LAID DIRECTLY
ON THE OVERTURNED FABRIC AND
EXTENDS TO THE RECONSTRUCTED
SLOPE.
4. RIPRAP ON THE EXCAVATED SLOPE
ABOVE THE CULVERT INLET AND AT
THE OUTLET APRON MUST BE PLACED
ON GEOTEXTILE CONFORMING TO
CLASS 1, TYPE C. THE SHEET MUST
EXTENDS AT LEAST 8" BEYOND THE
PLACED ROCK.
5. THE 24" CMP IS TO BE INSTALLED AT A
CONTINUOUS GRADE OF 10% (4' DROP
OVER THE 40' RUN). THE OUTLET
FITTING IN THE DROP-INLET MUST BE
FABRICATED TO ACCOMMODATE A
PROPER CONNECTION AT THAT ANGLE.
6. INFORMATION ON THE DROP-INLET
COVER IS NOTED ON SHEET D-2
7. THE POST-FAILURE PROFILE AS SHOWN
HAS BEEN MODIFIED BY RECENT
TEMPORARY REPAIRS. THE
ESSENTIALCONDITIONS REMAIN AS
SHOWN.
